Khiva District offers two distinct focuses for planning a trip: the Shaykh-Mavlon-Bobo complex is in the village of Qiyot, and the district is also part of an ecotourism route along the Eshonrovot Reservoir. Khiva itself offers another way to explore the region’s history and architecture. When looking for hotels, it helps to first decide whether cultural sites, historic architecture, or the landscape should shape your stay.
Qiyot and the Shaykh-Mavlon-Bobo Complex
The complex in Qiyot includes a mausoleum, a mosque, a minaret, and an old cemetery. The ensemble also includes the mausoleums of the poets Muhammad Rizo Ogahiy and Munis Khorezmi. This makes the site a place where religious architecture meets the memory of two poets.
Shaykh Mavlon Bobo is associated with a much earlier historical period: he was an important Islamic teacher who lived in the 12th century. The architectural ensemble, by contrast, was built in 1891 by Muhammad Rahim Khan II. The person and the building therefore belong to different periods. This distinction helps place the site’s history in context without conflating the teacher’s lifetime with the creation of the ensemble.
Khiva and the Itchan Kala Fortress
Khiva became the capital of the Khiva Khanate in 1598. The inner fortress of Itchan Kala lies south of the Amu Darya in the Khorezm Region and has a history spanning more than two thousand years. It covers 26 hectares and is surrounded by brick walls up to ten meters high. Inside the fortress are 51 ancient monumental buildings and 250 residential houses.
Traditional residential forms include enclosed courtyard houses with reception rooms and carved wooden pillars. The Juma Mosque in Itchan Kala has a covered courtyard and 212 columns. Together, these details draw attention both to the wider urban layout and to individual architectural features. The streets in historic Khiva are paved with stone, and much of the building fabric has been preserved in its original form. Khiva also has more than 100 ancient mosques, madrasas, minarets, and mausoleums.
Additional architecture in the wider destination of Khorezm
The restored Nurullabay Palace is located in the northwestern part of Itchan Kala, within the wider destination of Khorezm. The complex consists of four courtyards. In its restored form, it includes nine large and small rooms, a reception room, an archive, a madrasa, rooms for servants and guards, a garden, and flower beds. The palace embodies traditional features of Xorazm’s national residential architecture.
The four courtyards and the various rooms provide another architectural point of reference within Khorezm. Together with the fortified walls, residential houses, and religious buildings in Khiva, they show how varied the architectural forms described here are. This makes it possible to plan around either an overview of the complex or an interest in individual rooms and their functions.
Regional cuisine in Khorezm
The cuisine also offers different kinds of regional specialties. In the wider destination of Khorezm, Shivit Oshi is a dish from Xorazm: bright green noodles made with dill infusion, served with meat sauce and a tangy fermented milk topping. Tukhum Barak is a traditional Xorazm dumpling filled with an egg-based mixture. The difference is clear: Shivit Oshi centers on the green noodles and their accompaniments, while Tukhum Barak is a filled dumpling.
Landscape, arrival, and finding accommodation
For nature-focused visitors, the ecotourism route along the Eshonrovot Reservoir is a distinct point of interest in Khiva District. Khiva can be reached by train from Tashkent. A travel itinerary for Khorezm also includes a transfer from Urgench International Airport to the Ichan-Qala State Museum Reserve in Khiva. The train journey and the planned transfer refer to different starting points, so plan your arrival according to where your trip begins.
When looking for hotels in Khiva District, you can narrow your focus to the complex in Qiyot, the ecotourism route along the Eshonrovot Reservoir, or the history and architecture of Khiva.
