A suspension bridge over the Arroyo Jabonería offers a view of one of the most characteristic landscapes of Valle Edén. Also discover traces of Carlos Gardel, historic sites and a variety of riverside landscapes. This is a way to get to know Tacuarembó through specific discoveries: from a view across a valley to museums, fossils and activities on the water.

Valle Edén: bridge, views and starry skies

The “Gregorio Simón Viera” suspension bridge crosses the Arroyo Jabonería. It is 100 metres long, and its deck is 1.20 metres wide. From the bridge, you can enjoy a view of one of the most characteristic landscapes of Valle Edén. The structure and the view are closely connected here: the construction itself is also a specific part of the visit, alongside the landscape.

For orientation: Valle Edén is located at kilometre 208 of Ruta 26, 23 kilometres from the city of Tacuarembó and 18 kilometres from Tambores. These details give you an idea of the location without specifying a particular route or travel time.

Gardel, digital exhibition and astrotourism

The Museo Carlos Gardel is located in a former pulpería in Valle Edén. Its modern digital exhibition is dedicated to the singer’s life: it includes a timeline, personal items such as hats and guitars, and works by graphic artists who portrayed Gardel. Letters are also part of the experience. Visitors can select individual letters written by Gardel and read their contents using a virtual reader. In this way, biographical context, personal items and an interactive exploration of the letters are brought together.

In July 2026, an astrotourism viewpoint was inaugurated in the green space next to the Museo Carlos Gardel. During guided activities with experts, you can observe the moon through telescopes, learn about its craters and features, and learn to identify constellations and planets. Before your trip, check whether guided activities are available.

Discover history and geological history

On the slopes of Cerro Cementerio near Valle Edén, there are graves carved in stone and wood; burials there began in the 19th century. Cerro Batoví was declared part of Tacuarembó’s historical and cultural heritage and has been a prominent symbol on the department’s coat of arms since 1960. The two sites offer different historical perspectives: one on burial history, the other on the hill’s significance to the department.

The Museo de Geociencias offers a different focus. Its fossil collections include giant Jurassic molluscs that are unique in the world. If you are interested in geological history, you’ll find a subject here that stands apart from the stories surrounding Gardel and the historic sites.

San Gregorio de Polanco also offers a variety of cultural points of interest. The Museo Abierto de Artes Visuales was inaugurated in 1993. The Museo Histórico Casa Muga (MUHCAM) has a documentary collection on trade and more than 400 archaeological objects. The two museums thus represent different subjects: visual art on the one hand, and the history of trade and archaeological finds on the other.

Riversides, landscapes and activities on the water

Lago de la Juventud in Balneario Iporá has sandy and rocky shores, with wooded hills surrounding the bathing area. Near San Gregorio de Polanco, beaches and planted pine and eucalyptus forests provide a setting for water sports, sport fishing and observing native wildlife. These landscapes offer different highlights: the mix of sandy and rocky shores at Iporá, and the combination of beaches and forest around San Gregorio.

On the Río Negro near Paso de los Toros, you can go canoeing, swimming, sport fishing and mountain biking, or relax on freshwater beaches. River and beach conditions may vary; check current conditions before taking part in water-based activities.

The grounds of Laguna de las Lavanderas have space for camping, as well as barbecue areas, toilets, water and electricity. If you plan to include this option in your trip, check the current condition of the facilities before visiting.
