A historic and cultural walking tour, about two kilometers long, invites you to explore the city of Salto on foot. The approximate distance gives you a concrete sense of how far you will walk through the city; if needed, you can check the route locally. The Department of Salto also offers more than this city walk: museums, a large park, thermal centers, a lit cycle path and opportunities for nature watching appeal to a range of interests. You can shape your visit around whether you are looking for culture, landscaped grounds or outdoor activities.

Museums and biographical traces

The Museo de ArqueologĂa y Ciencias Naturales displays collections focused on archaeology and paleontology. These two subjects offer different perspectives on the past and natural history, making the museum an interesting choice if you want to explore more than one historical connection.

The Museo HistĂłrico del RĂo Uruguay focuses on shipping and life on board. Its collection includes documents, photographs and objects from sunken ships, as well as ship models, uniforms, flags and maritime symbols. Old tickets and objects from life on board add further aspects of shipping history to this perspective. Visits are by prior arrangement.

The city also has a biographical connection: the building where Horacio Quiroga was born is on Salto’s main street. For travelers interested in individual life stories, this location offers another starting point for exploring the city.

Park design and thermal destinations

Parque Benito Solari offers a different focus from the museums. The 17-hectare park dates back to 1900 and is designed in the French style. It features many types of trees and flowers, a lake with a statue, paths and other landscaped elements. As you stroll, you can take in the grounds as a whole, from the plantings and lake to the landscaped paths.

The thermal tourism centers of Arapey and Daymán are located in the Department of Salto. Both have outdoor pools as well as indoor and partially covered pools, surrounded by gardens and green spaces. The different types of pools give you a concrete point of reference if you want to compare thermal facilities; the gardens and green spaces are a shared feature of the settings described.

A photo gallery was inaugurated in Termas del Arapey in 2021. Its sequence of images tells the story of the place and its development. If you plan to visit the gallery, it is advisable to check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors.

Getting around and enjoying the outdoors

A lit cycle path connects Cuatro Bocas with Termas de Daymán. The named endpoints make the route easy to identify; check local route conditions before planning your trip. Salto Chico offers opportunities for fishing and nature watching. These add more ways to explore the department to its city walks and museum visits.

Free guided tours are offered at Represa de Salto Grande. Transport is provided from the public relations office in the building of the Comisión Técnica Mixta de Salto Grande on the Uruguayan bank. Check the practical details before your visit so you can take the tour and transport into account in your plans.
