Villa Serrana combines nature trails, an artificial lake, and a distinctive architectural heritage. For your trip, there are several different highlights to explore: the landscape of Parque La Guarida, its self-guided trails, and the town’s architectural culture. Ventorrillo de la Buena Vista provides a specific architectural landmark; the celebrations marking the geopark designation in 2026 add a geological perspective.

Woodland Landscape and Geological History

Parque La Guarida covers more than 20 hectares of native forest at the foot of Cerro Guazubira in the hills of Villa Serrana. Its landscape features include waterfalls, stone walls considered to be more than 500 million years old, and viewpoints within a biological corridor. The forest, geological formations, and viewpoints give the natural area several distinct facets. The park can therefore be appreciated not only for its forest area, but also for the geological features and viewpoints that make up its landscape.

The artificial lake also has a specific historical context. Work to dam Arroyo Miraflores and Cañada de la Leona was completed in 1958, creating the lake. Its creation adds a man-made body of water to the area’s natural features. For those interested in landscapes, alongside forests, waterfalls, and stone walls, there is also a human intervention in the landscape with a specific date.

Nature Trails in Parque La Guarida

The park has two self-guided nature trails, measuring 1.5 and 3 kilometers. The routes are easy to compare: the longer trail is twice as long as the shorter one. Along the trails, codes provide virtual information about the places being viewed. Topics include invasive alien species, geology, and the relationship between the community and the environment. The trails thus combine time outdoors with explanations of nature and human-environment relationships.

Visits to Parque La Guarida are possible by prior arrangement only. Capacity is limited, and the park may close due to weather. Keep these conditions in mind if you plan to make the nature trail a fixed part of your trip.

Architecture and Cultural Heritage

Ventorrillo de la Buena Vista is a National Historic Monument and is considered an icon of Uruguayan tourism. It is also recognized as National Cultural Heritage and as one of Villa Serrana’s most distinctive buildings. Villa Serrana itself is considered an emblem of mid-20th-century architecture. This brings a specific building together with a broader architectural characterization of the town: Ventorrillo provides a named landmark, while the description of Villa Serrana considers the town’s architecture as a whole.

A more recent event is also part of the town’s history: in May 2026, Villa Serrana was the center of celebrations marking the designation of “Manantiales Serranos” as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The celebration points to a focus beyond architectural heritage and nature trails, and places the town in the context of the geopark designation.

Lavalleja as a Regional Setting

In the wider travel destination of Lavalleja, the UNESCO Global Geopark Manantiales Serranos is located in southeastern Uruguay. The geopark includes 18 geological sites, 27 cultural sites, and eight sites of ecological value. This regional context broadens Villa Serrana’s local themes to include the geopark’s geological, cultural, and ecological diversity.
