Mariscala combines a precise location in the east of the Department of Lavalleja with a local history marked by two dates and several names. The name 19 de Abril is associated with its founding in 1910, while its elevation to the status of pueblo and renaming as Mariscala followed in 1918. This distinction provides a clear way into the town’s history; a broader context is the overarching destination of Lavalleja.

Mariscala among named landscape features

Mariscala lies in the east of the Department of Lavalleja, between the Arroyo Sarandí to the north and the Arroyo Calera to the south, south of the Cuchilla del Águila. The three names describe its location from different directions: Sarandí is the northern reference point, Calera the southern one, and the Cuchilla lies north of the town. This makes it possible to locate Mariscala precisely at the local level, rather than referring only to the department as a whole. This distinction is useful for orientation: Lavalleja refers to the broader regional context, while Mariscala identifies the specific town.

From 19 de Abril to Mariscala

The story of its founding explains why two names were used in the past. On April 19, 1910, the settlement was founded under the name 19 de Abril in honor of the landing of the 33 Orientales; the area was already known as Mariscala. In this first step, 19 de Abril was the name of the newly founded settlement, while Mariscala was the name of the area. The founding name and the place name therefore belong to different historical contexts.

On February 1, 1918, the hamlet was elevated to the status of pueblo by Law No. 5639 and renamed Mariscala. The new name honored the wife of José Joaquín de Viana, Mariscal del Campo and the first governor of Montevideo. The sequence of founding, elevation in status, and renaming can thus be distinguished: 1910 marks the founding, while 1918 marks the statutory elevation and the adoption of the name by which Mariscala is known today.

A cultural highlight

At one edition of the Fiesta de nuestros pueblos, rock and cumbia came together in Mariscala. This festive moment adds a musical perspective to the town’s history: while the founding dates mark the town’s transformation, rock and cumbia represent the cultural highlight of this edition.

Lavalleja as the broader context

The UNESCO Global Geopark Manantiales Serranos is located within the broader destination of Lavalleja. It lies in southeastern Uruguay, in the Department of Lavalleja, and includes 18 geosites of geological value, 27 cultural sites, and eight sites of ecological value. The three categories bring geological, cultural, and ecological values together and offer insight into the Geopark’s different areas of focus.

Villa Serrana is also considered a place of special natural and cultural heritage value. Together, the Geopark and Villa Serrana provide further regional points of reference for Lavalleja. They are part of the broader destination; Mariscala remains distinct as a specific town with its own location and history of names.
