Marrowstone offers different ways to plan a trip based on your interests: Fort Flagler provides a close look at 1890s military architecture, while natural areas raise questions about watercraft, wildlife watching, and access. There is also a farm visit by reservation and Marrowstone Vineyards, overlooking Puget Sound. If you’re looking for a hotel in Marrowstone, you can first decide which of these experiences you want to shape your stay.

Military Architecture and Lighthouse

Fort Flagler is an outstanding example of 1890s military architecture. Its original military buildings include gun emplacements, noncommissioned officers’ quarters, and a hospital. The historic complex therefore encompasses different types of buildings, from gun emplacements to quarters and a hospital.

Marrowstone Point Lighthouse is next to Fort Flagler Historical State Park and overlooks Admiralty Inlet. It is helpful to distinguish their focus: Fort Flagler represents military architecture and the original buildings mentioned above, while Marrowstone Point Lighthouse offers a view of Admiralty Inlet. Those particularly interested in architectural history will find a specific subject at the fort; the lighthouse adds a different, maritime focus.

Coastal Areas and Water Access

Mystery Bay State Park is on the west side of Marrowstone Island and has a single-lane boat launch. For visitors interested in boating, this is a specific feature of the park: the launch has one lane. The park can thus be understood in terms of its location on the island and this named facility.

Kinney Point State Park Property is also on Marrowstone Island, is part of the Cascadia Marine Trail, and can be reached only by watercraft suitable for beach landings. Check access conditions before your trip. The difference from Mystery Bay is important for planning: a single-lane boat launch is mentioned there, whereas Kinney Point has an expressly limited type of access.

Wildlife Watching and Fishing

The Marrowstone Wildlife Area Unit includes an area next to Fort Flagler Historical State Park at the northwestern tip of Marrowstone Island. The unit offers opportunities for saltwater shoreline fishing and for watching deer, ducks, geese, terns, and shorebirds. The focus is therefore on two different activities: fishing along the coast or watching the wildlife groups mentioned above.

Access is limited, and seasonal access restrictions apply in parts of the unit. Conditions and fishing regulations may change. When planning, consider both the activity you want to pursue and the applicable access conditions; the seasonal restrictions are especially relevant for wildlife watching.

Farm Tours and Puget Sound

Mystery Bay Farm offers educational farm tours on Marrowstone Island; visits are by reservation. If you plan to include this activity, making a reservation is part of the preparation.

Marrowstone Vineyards overlooks Puget Sound. Along with the farm tours, this view adds an option with a different focus from fort architecture or wildlife watching. The two offerings appeal to different interests: Mystery Bay Farm centers on educational tours, while Marrowstone Vineyards centers on the view of Puget Sound.
