Fort Flagler Historical State Park includes many original military buildings dating from around the turn of the 20th century: gun batteries, noncommissioned officers’ quarters, and a hospital. At the same time, the park offers views of the Olympic Mountains, the Cascade Mountains, and Puget Sound. Trails run along the beach and through wooded areas. In Jefferson County, historic military sites meet a variety of coastal and forest landscapes.
Fort History Between Coast and Forest
Fort Townsend marks a different period: it was established in 1856. This wooded former military site provides access to the beach on Port Townsend Bay and includes 6.5 miles of hiking trails. Fort Worden also offers a glimpse into coastal history. The historical state park overlooks Admiralty Inlet at the entrance to Puget Sound and has 12 miles of hiking trails. The trails therefore differ not only in length, but are also part of parks with distinct landscapes.
At Fort Worden, the Commanding Officer’s Quarters Museum explores the life of an officer and his family in the 20th century. The Fort Flagler Museum is housed in the historic Quartermaster Storehouse. Its exhibits cover the strategic role of the Coast Artillery Corps and the daily lives of soldiers in the early 20th century; they also include a nature-themed touch table.
Port Townsend: Maritime History and Museums
Port Townsend is one of only three Victorian seaports listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Jefferson County Historical Society offers immersive walking tours through the city’s picturesque streets, focusing on its stories. A newly designed museum space brings together art, history, and community stories around shared themes. The Rothschild House preserves its original furnishings and personal belongings as an authentic time capsule of a bygone era.
These cultural sites have distinct focuses: the fort museums tell stories of everyday military life and its strategic significance, while the museum considers art, history, and community stories together. The Rothschild House draws attention to preserved furnishings and personal belongings. If you are interested in the area’s history, the walking tours of Port Townsend also offer a distinctive way to explore the city’s stories.
Explore Trails and Landscapes
The 7.3-mile Larry Scott Memorial Trail is a non-motorized, multi-use trail running from Port Townsend Boat Haven to Milo Curry Road in the Four Corners area at Discovery Bay. It forms the first segment of the Olympic Discovery Trail, which is intended to connect Jefferson County to the Pacific Ocean via Sequim, Port Angeles, and Forks. Another trail with named endpoints is the first phase of the Rick Tollefson Trail: it connects HJ Carroll Park with Old Hadlock Road and was completed in 2018.
The state parks also offer different types of trails. Fort Worden has 12 miles of hiking trails, while Fort Townsend has 6.5 miles. Anderson Lake State Park has hiking, horseback riding, and biking trails. Cedar, fir, and alder forests, a freshwater marsh, and a lake with numerous birds and other wildlife shape the landscape there. Mystery Bay State Park is located on the western shore of Marrowstone Island and offers views of the Olympic Mountains. It can be reached by land or by boat, offers water activities, and has a single-lane boat launch.
The Ludlow Falls Interpretive Trail offers a shorter option: the loop around the waterfall is half a mile long and has interpretive signs. The trails described range from a long multi-use trail to park hiking trails and a short loop with interpretive stops. Before recreational activities at Anderson Lake, check current closure notices and water advisories; for Mystery Bay State Park, it is also a good idea to check the latest park notices.
