Black lava rocks and red rock ridges shape Toquerville’s landscape; preserved homes and a historic walking tour complement the natural setting with local history. For planning, several different highlights are available: architecture, community parks, and trails for different activities. The La Verkin Creek Path is suitable for walking, jogging, and cycling along the creek; the Toquerville Falls Main Trail is an 11.8-mile out-and-back route.
Architecture and Local History
Toquerville Hall is a one-story meeting house in the Greek Revival style: its temple form is complemented by subtle Italianate elements. It is locally significant under Criterion A in the areas of religion, entertainment, and recreation. The John Steele House has a different character: a one-story adobe house in regional vernacular architecture with two parlors, built around 1862. The Thomas Forsyth House was built around 1868 and is one of the few surviving pioneer-era homes in Toquerville and throughout Washington County.
Toquerville has a walking tour of four historic buildings listed in the National Historic Registry and fourteen other historically significant buildings. Fig harvesting is also part of the town’s history: Toquerville was known for it, and people traveled from elsewhere to buy the harvest.
Landscape, Parks, and Trails
The landscape includes black lava rocks and red rock ridges. Ash Creek Canyon runs through Toquerville and contributes to the surrounding riparian habitat. The rock formations and creek surroundings offer distinct landscape features to explore locally.
The city parks are open to the public for residents and visitors. Private reservations may temporarily restrict public access; individual facilities may also be reserved. Center Street Park has a paved path and a bridge over Ash Creek. Trail Ridge Estates Park includes a disc golf course, a path, and a bridge over La Verkin Creek. The parks therefore offer different amenities: one has a path and bridge at Ash Creek, while the other also has disc golf and a connection across La Verkin Creek.
The La Verkin Creek Path offers opportunities for walking, jogging, and cycling along La Verkin Creek. The Toquerville Falls Main Trail offers a different kind of outing: the 11.8-mile out-and-back route follows a gravel or unpaved road and has 1,978 feet of elevation gain. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
Nephi's Twist is a downhill, singletrack mountain biking trail rated Black Diamond and is one of the so-called social trails. Conditions and access may change on this trail; check both beforehand. This makes it easy to distinguish between different activities: from walking, jogging, or cycling along the creek to a designated mountain biking trail or a longer out-and-back route.
