Hempstead offers a range of reasons to visit: rare plants at the John Fairey Garden, walking trails in parks, and annual festivals. When planning your dates, note that the garden’s Open Days pause for two summer months, while the Zydeco Festival takes place annually in July or August. Liendo Plantation is a historic landmark, but it is permanently closed to the public—visits, tours, and events are not possible there.
Plant Diversity at the John Fairey Garden
The John Fairey Garden brings together rare, drought-tolerant plants native to the southern United States and remote mountain regions of Mexico and Asia. Its plant collections from Mexico and Texas are also extensive. Their origins and characteristics offer different perspectives: the origins place the collections in a geographic context, while drought tolerance describes a characteristic of the plants.
Propagation is also part of the garden’s horticultural profile: most plants offered in the nursery are propagated in the garden or grown from seeds and plant material collected on expeditions. This goes beyond the origins of the collections to include how a large share of the plants on offer are grown.
Open Days take place every Saturday, except during two summer months. Another recurring date is the Budding Out Plant Sale and Festival, held on the last Saturday in March. If you want to plan your trip around an Open Day or the festival, check the specific date in advance.
Festivals and Walking Trails
The City of Hempstead hosts the Zydeco Festival annually in July or August. The Watermelon Festival also returns every year and includes a BBQ Cook-off. The events offer different highlights: the summer timing of the Zydeco Festival can help with trip planning, while the Cook-off is a specific part of the Watermelon Festival.
For recreation and exercise, Hempstead offers walking trails in a city park and in another park owned by a church. The trails are intended for fitness and leisure activities. Along with a garden visit or festival, you can make walks a focus of your trip.
Liendo Plantation: Historic House, Permanently Closed
Liendo Plantation is a Greek Revival-style house listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These features give the site historical and architectural significance. However, there is a clear limit when planning a visit: the property is permanently closed to the public, including all tours and events. It therefore cannot be planned as a publicly accessible sightseeing stop.
Find Hotels for Your Trip
Plan your travel dates around a garden event or festival, for example, or add walks in the parks to your personal list of priorities. If an event is the deciding factor, check its date before booking your accommodation.
