Sonora offers a range of highlights to consider when planning a trip: local pioneer history is reflected in a historic home and collections, while buildings and a nature park offer other points of interest. Those interested in caves can also find guided tours at the Caverns of Sonora, 15 miles southwest of Sonora, Texas. The differences between these offerings help you choose outings based on your own interests.

Pioneer History at the Miers Home Museum

The Miers Home Museum is a restored historic home dating from the 1890s. The house displays artifacts and keepsakes related to Sonora’s pioneer history. The history of the building and the history of the region meet here: The home itself dates from a formative early period, while the collection focuses on life in Sonora and the region’s past.

The museum’s holdings also include issues of the local newspaper The Devil’s River News, archived from 1890 onward.

Architecture and Getting Oriented

The Sutton County Courthouse offers a distinct architectural point of interest: It was designed by architect Oscar Ruffini. The original well site is also on the courthouse lawn. Brochures for self-guided walking tours are available in front of the building, beside the historic markers. The architecture, the specific historic site on the lawn, and the brochures are therefore separate aspects of a visit to the courthouse.

Another historic building is the John & Mildred Cauthorn Memorial Building. It serves as a community gathering place in a restored Santa Fe railroad depot dating from the 1930s. Its role as a gathering place and its history as a railroad depot give the building two distinct connections: It is associated with both the local community and railroad history.

For orientation, the Sonora Ice House Ranch Museum is just off Main Street on Water Avenue, near the Sutton County Courthouse.

Nature Trails, Swimming, and Cave Tours

The Eaton Hill Nature Center is a 37-acre nature park with more than 3 miles of hiking trails. Unlike the exhibits at the Miers Home Museum and the architecture at the courthouse, the focus here is on the nature park and its trails.

The Caverns of Sonora are 15 miles southwest of Sonora, Texas, and offer personally guided tours through the cave system. Since tour offerings can change, check current tour options before planning. This makes it possible to distinguish this cave attraction from the trails at the Eaton Hill Nature Center without assuming that they share a route or require a particular visit duration.

Another activity is the Sonora Swimming Pool, a public swimming pool with water slides. Nature park trails, a guided cave tour, and a visit to the swimming pool offer different activities during your stay. When looking for a vacation rental, you can first decide what you would most like to do during your stay.
