Rio Grande City lies on the Rio Grande near the Texas–Mexico border and is part of Los Caminos del Rio, a heritage corridor rich in natural and cultural legacies. To get your bearings, consider two perspectives: the river and border region on the one hand, and local architectural and cultural landmarks on the other. The city offers several thematic points of interest: religious architecture, military history, houses with varied architectural influences, and events centered on art and markets.

Cultural History in Buildings and Places

The Immaculate Conception Church in Rio Grande City was built in 1858 and is one of the region’s oldest Catholic churches. Fort Ringgold served as an important military outpost on the Rio Grande from 1848 to 1944. These sites offer different ways to explore the city’s history through religious architecture and military use.

The surviving buildings of the Fort Ringgold Historic District also offer a concrete picture of its architecture: built after 1869, they are predominantly one- or two-story brick buildings arranged around a central parade ground. When exploring the district, both the individual buildings and their arrangement around the grounds are worth considering.

Two other houses differ in both their dates and the architectural influences attributed to them. The Samuel Julian Stewart House dates to around 1850 and is known for combining Spanish and Mexican architectural influences. The LaBorde Hotel dates to 1877 and reflects a combination of Spanish and French-influenced architectural traditions. Both examples share Spanish influences; the Stewart House also has a Mexican influence, while the LaBorde Hotel has a French one.

The Bessie III Trolley Tour passes through side streets and lesser-known places, making attractions in historic downtown Rio Grande City accessible. The Old Rio Grande City Cemetery adds a community perspective to the area’s history: it is the resting place of more than 250 members of the Rio Grande City community.

Plan Around Art and Market Events

Market Days features homemade foods, as well as locally made crafts and artworks. The event takes place on the third Saturday of each month from 6 to 10 p.m. on Britton Avenue, in front of the historic Britton Avenue Quiosco, or bandstand. If you plan your stay around this event, check the event date in advance.

Paseo del Arte typically takes place from January through March and showcases Rio Grande City’s visual arts scene in and around the historic downtown district. In terms of timing, Market Days is held monthly, while Paseo del Arte is associated with the typical period from January through March. If an event is the reason for your trip, take these different schedules into account when planning.

The mailing address of the Kelsey Bass Museum is 101 S. Washington St., Rio Grande City, 78582.

To choose a theme for your trip, consider whether you are mainly interested in architectural and military history or in an art or market event. The buildings offer several examples from different periods and with different architectural influences; for a trip focused on an event, the specific date is what matters. This can help you decide on the focus of your stay before looking for hotels in Rio Grande City.
