San Augustine offers several ways to explore local and regional history, as well as opportunities for wildlife viewing and walks. The historic El Camino Real ran from Natchitoches, Louisiana, to Mexico City, passing through San Augustine. This gives you different options when planning your trip: historic routes and museums, or time outdoors.

History and Museums in San Augustine

El Camino Real gives the town a distinct place along an extensive historic route. Among the significant historic sites is Mission Dolores: the Spanish mission was built in 1721 and is located in present-day San Augustine County. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a State Antiquities Landmark.

The Angus Theater, also known as the Museum Theater, combines architectural history with a cultural connection. The building dates from the 1920s and houses the San Augustine County Historical Society. It is designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Those interested in the town's history will find both a historic building and a connection to a local historical society here.

Around the square, Windows Into History offers an artistic, three-dimensional walking tour of San Augustine. Visitors can learn about the Ais, who once lived in the region. The combination of public art and a historical theme makes the tour a different way to explore the area than a museum visit.

Built in 1839, the Ezekiel Cullen House is now a museum with a collection of paintings by Seymour Thomas. San Augustine Main Street provides information and accepts bookings for tours of historic sites, including the house. If you would like to plan a tour, you can ask there about the available options.

The restored San Augustine County Jail dates from 1919 and was used as a Law Enforcement Museum. It has been designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and designated a State Antiquities Landmark. The Law Enforcement Museum in the former jail also includes a Texana research library. Together, the focus is on a historic building, its designations, and a research resource.

Mission Dolores and Outdoor Trails

Mission Dolores State Historic Site is about more than the history of the Spanish mission built in 1721. Visitors can explore the museum, have a picnic, play disc golf, and camp. A visit can therefore include a range of activities; which one defines your stay depends on whether you want to focus on the museum or spend time outdoors.

For birdwatching, a long boardwalk runs from the San Augustine Tourism Center over Ayish Bayou to the caboose. The route offers opportunities to watch birds, making it especially interesting for visitors who want to focus on wildlife during their stay.

A nature trail runs through the woods and is about one-third of a mile long. It extends from a small wooden bridge near the caboose to South Broadway at Highway 147, south of Mission Dolores. The trail description gives both the approximate length and the route and endpoint—useful details for deciding how to fit the walk into your plans.

The historic sites and museums offer a different focus from the boardwalk and woodland trail: the former highlight local history and cultural themes, while the latter offer birdwatching and a walk through the woods.
