Explore Port Arthur through a range of interests: the history of the Gulf Coast region, architecture and waterscapes. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, first consider what you want your trip to focus on.

Culture and Architecture

The Museum of the Gulf Coast collects photographs, documents and material objects relating to the biology and history of the Gulf Coast region. Its timeline stretches from prehistoric times to the present. Three galleries are devoted to notable figures from the region. The collection therefore focuses both on a broad historical overview and on regional figures as subjects in their own right.

At the Pompeiian Villa, the rooms are arranged around a traditional Roman peristyle. Here, a peristyle is a three-sided courtyard that every room opens onto. Understanding the term makes the villa’s distinctive layout easier to appreciate: the courtyard is not merely a room in its own right, but a focal point for the arrangement of the rooms around it.

The Buu Mon Buddhist Temple was consecrated on August 15, 1987. Its four-story pagoda tower symbolizes fundamental Buddhist principles. The year of consecration and the tower offer two different ways to appreciate the temple: its specific place in history and the significance attributed to its architecture. Visitors can walk around the temple grounds; check whether visits are possible before your trip.

Port Arthur’s Faith Trail also offers a distinctive way to experience architecture and design. Sections of the trail offer peaceful views and opportunities to observe architectural forms and appreciate artistic styles. This provides a different cultural focus from the museum’s collections or the villa’s layout: here, the emphasis is on views and the appreciation of design.

Pleasure Island: Water and Nature

Pleasure Island is an artificial landmass 18.5 miles long. It extends from the mouth of the Neches River in the northwest to the Sabine Causeway in the southeast. Sabine Lake and the Sabine-Neches Intracoastal Waterway surround the island. This describes the extent of the landscape; it should not be confused with the length of the piers.

Pleasure Island has about a mile of piers for walking or exercising, with views over Sabine Lake. The Bird Blind offers a different experience: it sits in a secluded spot beside a pond, near the distinctive golf-ball-shaped water tower, and is used to identify and photograph numerous bird species. The piers combine exercise with views across the lake, while the Bird Blind puts birdwatching center stage.

These differences can help you choose what to focus on when planning your trip. If you’re interested in architecture and history, the museum, villa, temple and Faith Trail each offer different subjects to explore. If you’d rather spend time outdoors, the piers and Bird Blind offer different ways to experience the waterscape. Choose a vacation rental based on what matters to you during your stay.
