The water tradition began with the drilling of a well in 1892. An artesian reservoir supplied 48,000 gallons of hot mineral water each day. A health resort grew around this water, and a bathhouse was built in 1895. During the resort era, Marlin attracted people seeking better health from across the country. Marlin’s mineral water tradition continued into the 1960s, particularly as the medical field adopted the water and developed its use in physical therapy.

Architectural History from Art Moderne to Greek Revival

The Falls County Courthouse was completed in 1939 and designed in the Art Moderne style. Much of its façade is made of Austin Shellstone, and its entrance steps are made of Texas pink granite. This means the building can be understood through more than its style: the different materials used on the façade and entrance are also specific details. The Allen House offers a different architectural accent. Built in 1911 in the Greek Revival style, it features a monumental entablature supported by two massive Ionic columns. The restored house is used as a community center. At the Highlands Mansion, the dates take center stage: it was built around 1898 to 1900 and restored between 1964 and 1967. For architecture enthusiasts, each building raises different questions: at the courthouse, façade materials and style go hand in hand; at the Allen House, the focus is on the column order and entablature; and at the Highlands Mansion, on its construction and restoration phases.

Church History and Community Life

Church history also offers two clearly dated perspectives. The First Baptist Church of Marlin congregation had ten founding members on April 10, 1852. Its early services were held first in the log courthouse and later in a two-story schoolhouse. The Marlin Missionary Baptist Church was founded on November 8, 1868, and was the earliest Black congregation in Falls County. The two founding dates are just over 16 years apart: for the first congregation, the focus is on the number of founding members and early meeting places; for the second, on its historical significance in the county.
