Seneca brings together city history, art and outdoor activities. When planning your visit, it’s worth distinguishing between the different highlights: the historic district and Ram Cat Alley offer different perspectives on the city center’s history, while the gallery and theater each have their own cultural focus. Outdoors, options range from disc golf and a nature and cross-country trail to access to Lake Keowee. This makes it easier to decide whether history, performing arts, exercise or water activities should be the focus of your stay.

City History, Art and Theater

Seneca’s historic district reflects the development of the city center as a commercial hub from about 1887 to 1930. This gives the city’s history a time frame spanning several decades. Ram Cat Alley, by contrast, draws attention to the history of a street name. Around 1908, Fred Hopkins Meat Market was located on this street; because cats often gathered there, the name Ram Cat Alley came about. Today, the passage is also pedestrian-friendly and lined with boutiques and restaurants in the historic center. The district represents the longer-term development of commerce, while Ram Cat Alley also offers a specific story behind its name.

The Louise Matheson Bell Gallery features changing exhibitions by local artists, as well as historical exhibitions on topics related to the local area. Admission to the gallery is free to the public. If a particular exhibition is important to your plans, check the current exhibition dates in advance.

Tours of the Bertha Lee Strickland Cultural Museum are available by appointment. If you’re planning a tour, arrange it in advance.

The Oconee Community Theatre is housed in a school building originally constructed in 1927 and offers live entertainment featuring drama, music, art and dance. The theater thus combines a distinctive building history with a range of cultural programming. If you’d like to attend a performance, check the event schedule for your travel dates.

The Ram Cat Alley CAT murals are a series of twelve murals in Norton Thompson Park in Seneca. The cats depicted in the murals were painted by twelve local artists. Alongside the story behind the street name, the series offers a distinct artistic interpretation inspired by the name Ram Cat Alley.

Outdoor and Waterfront Recreation

The Seneca Recreation Department maintains an 18-hole championship disc golf course and a 3.2-mile nature and cross-country trail. The details distinguish between the options: disc golf centers on a course with a set number of holes, while the other option is a trail with a specified length. You can weigh a game-focused activity against a nature and cross-country trail.

Seneca offers access to Lake Keowee for fishing, boating, swimming and kayaking. This water-focused option complements the city’s history and the recreational opportunities maintained by the Recreation Department, adding more possibilities as you plan your stay.
