Darlington offers several themes to consider when planning a trip: NASCAR racing, historic architecture and the history of the region. Williamson Park adds a place to walk and hike. If you’re looking for accommodation, first consider which theme you want to shape your stay.
Motorsport History and Museums
Darlington Raceway has hosted NASCAR races since 1950, including the well-known NASCAR CUP SERIES Southern 500. The first Southern 500 at the track took place on September 4, 1950. At the time, 75 cars took part, and around 25,000 spectators watched the race. This makes Darlington’s motorsport history tangible through a specific event and date.
The National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame features photos, memorabilia and interactive exhibits about NASCAR and the people who have shaped the sport. The Darlington Raceway Stock Car Museum offers a different perspective: it focuses on the origins of stock car racing. The two venues highlight different aspects—the first, NASCAR and its personalities; the second, the roots of the sport.
The Raceway also offers driving experiences. Participants can drive a real NASCAR race car on the historic track or take part in a high-speed ride as passengers. If such an experience is important to your plans, check dates and reservation options in advance; these can change.
Historic Districts and Buildings
Darlington has five nationally recognized historic districts. The Darlington Downtown Historic District includes 21 contributing, intact commercial buildings associated with the city’s growth between 1870 and 1935. The Darlington Industrial Historic District comprises 13 contributing industrial buildings, structures and sites built between 1890 and 1935. The two districts represent different aspects of the city’s history: commerce and industrial heritage.
Intact homes dating from 1890 to 1928 define the West Broad Street Historic District. The architectural styles found there include Victorian and Queen Anne. The Julius Dargan House is a separate landmark in the district: it was built around 1856 in the Greek Revival style. The Darlington Library was built around 1921 with funds donated by the Carnegie Foundation.
The dates help distinguish individual buildings from larger districts. The Julius Dargan House dates to around the mid-19th century; the periods given for the districts span the late 19th to the early 20th century. The Library adds a public building with its own history to this picture. Together, these facts offer different ways to explore the history of architecture and the city, rather than pointing to a single, uniform period of construction.
Local History and a Walk
The Darlington County Historical Commission & Museum presents more than 14,000 years of local history—from the region’s earliest inhabitants through the 20th century. Its monthly programs include children’s programs, a lecture series, hands-on learning activities and local tours. If you’re visiting for a specific program, check the dates in advance, as the schedule can change.
For outdoor exercise, Williamson Park offers an easy 1.5-mile trail with dirt and boardwalk sections for walking and hiking. The changing trail surfaces are a practical difference when choosing an outing compared with visiting museums and exploring architecture. As trail conditions can change, check the trail’s condition before setting out.
Getting There and Planning Your Accommodation
