The Creek Nation Council House combines an early construction history with a later educational role: the original building was constructed in 1868. After a fire destroyed it, the house was rebuilt in stone in 1878. In 1923, it was established as a museum and educational center for Native American history.
History on Two Scales
Exhibits, new displays, and a gift shop are also part of the Council House visitor experience. Individual offerings may change. If a particular exhibit or the shop is important to your plans, check in advance what is currently available.
The Okmulgee Downtown Historic District covers several blocks, including the African American business district at 5th & 6th Streets. More than 140 buildings were nominated for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places for their architectural significance and importance to the city’s history.
The two historical themes have different focuses: the Council House centers on its construction history and later museum and educational role. The District focuses on architecture and urban history across several blocks.
Nature and Recreation
The Okmulgee & Dripping Springs Lake & Recreation Area lies directly west of the city. It has a 3.5-mile hiking trail, part of which is accessible under ADA standards. Because trail conditions can change, check in advance if needed to find out which section is currently accessible.
Nearby Dripping Springs Lake is designated Oklahoma’s first “Trophy Bass Lake.” Hawthorne Park has a skatepark and baseball and softball fields. If you plan to use a particular facility, check its current status, as offerings may change.
One Fire Casino offers more than 350 electronic games, including Texas Hold’em and blackjack, as well as weekend entertainment. If you’re planning a specific visit, check the current games and events, as offerings may change.
Recreation options vary by activity: the trail is for hiking, Hawthorne Park for skateboarding and ball games, and the casino for electronic games and weekend entertainment. This lets you choose your focus based on the kind of recreation you’re looking for.
Markets and Food Culture
At the Okmulgee Farmers Market, you can meet local farmers and market gardeners and take home fresh produce. The selection changes with the seasons; meeting the producers and finding seasonal products are central to the experience.
Coleman’s All Beef Burgers tells a different food story: it has been serving guests since the 1950s. The market and burger restaurant have different emphases—seasonal produce and meeting producers on one hand, and a long tradition of welcoming guests on the other.
