The Glass Mountains give Major County a distinctive landscape feature. They rise 150 to 200 feet above the county’s flat surface and are also known as the Gloss Mountains. The contrast between the flat landscape and the ridges makes this geological formation especially striking. Glass Mountains and Gloss Mountains refer to the same named landscape, not two separate destinations.
Landscape and Hiking
At Gloss Mountains State Park, a hike to Cathedral Mountain is available. Daily hiking and picnicking are permitted from sunrise to sunset. Check current access and trail conditions before setting out. This lets you explore the landscape with a specific destination in mind, without requiring a fixed itinerary.
Fairview: Road Junction and History
Fairview is the county seat of Major County and is located at the junction of State Highway 8 with State Highway 58 or U.S. Highway 60. This road location makes the town easy to find. Fairview’s transportation history also includes an earlier railroad role: in 1908, the town became a railroad division point with a repair shop and locomotive roundhouse. The road junction and historic rail facilities represent two different chapters in the town’s history; the railroad information refers to 1908.
The Major County Courthouse also brings Fairview’s history to life. The building is nearly square, four stories tall, and constructed of faced stone blocks. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Its shape and construction give its historic significance a visible architectural form.
Museums and Regional Heritage Sites
The Sand Creek Heritage Center & Museum in Fairview features two churches, a two-story hotel from the early 20th century, a one-room schoolhouse, a railroad depot with a locomotive, and a blacksmith shop. The grounds also include a veterans’ memorial. Churches and a schoolhouse sit alongside the hotel, depot, and blacksmith shop: the sites and buildings on display bring together religious, educational, hospitality, and craft- and transportation-related themes.
The Major County Historical Society & Museum in Fairview has been connected with the region’s history and heritage since 1985. The Ames Astrobleme Museum offers a different approach: it explains a catastrophic event through videos, computer animations, graphics, and diagrams. While Sand Creek features specific buildings and heritage sites, Ames focuses on presenting information through a variety of media.
Motorsports, Wine, and September Events
At the Hajek Motorsports Museum, you can see motorsports memorabilia and racing suits. The museum has the largest collection of historic dragsters. Visits are by appointment; check current access before planning. The visit therefore requires a specific arrangement and should not be planned as a spontaneous activity.
Indian Creek Village Winery pairs wine tasting with a clearly stated source for its wines: the tasting room serves wines made from grapes grown in the winery’s own vineyard. Tastings are available even without an overnight stay. As visitor availability may vary, check whether tastings are offered on your planned date.
The Major County Free Fair takes place every September at the Major County Fairgrounds in Fairview and includes an open horse show. If you would like to include the event in your trip, check the dates for the current edition. This lets you plan around the recurring September event without assuming specific event days.
