The Ouachita Mountains extend into Atoka County from the east; the Atoka WMA covers 6,537 acres in the county. For trip planning, you can consider nature, water, history and sports as distinct focuses. This lets you decide whether longer trails, water activities or historical subjects should take center stage.
Water and Trails
Atoka Lake covers 5,900 acres and has 59 miles of shoreline. It has boat ramps and basic campsites for tents and RVs. The McGee Creek Reservoir area includes a 3,350-acre lake and a 2,600-acre park. Atoka Lake is therefore larger in area than the lake in the McGee Creek Reservoir area.
McGee Creek State Park is on the southwestern edge of the Ouachita Mountain Range. It offers watersports and other water-based recreational activities along 64 miles of shoreline. At McGee Creek Reservoir, swimming, sailboarding, water skiing, boating and fishing are possible in the lower part of the reservoir. The reservoir also has several miles of multi-use trails that horseback riders can use.
Hiking options vary considerably in length. The McGee Creek Natural Scenic Recreation Area Trail System is closed to motorized vehicles and includes more than 25 miles of hiking trails. The Little Cedar Nature Trail in Boggy Depot Park is 0.75 miles long and passes through a deciduous forest. If you are comparing trail lengths, you can choose between a short nature trail and more than 25 miles of hiking trails in the Trail System.
History and Experiences
In addition to the Little Cedar Nature Trail, Boggy Depot Park offers other things to explore during your stay. The 18-hole Lost Loksi disc golf course was completed in 2020 and winds through wooded landscapes around a scenic lake. The park also has a fishing lake. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. If you plan to visit Lost Loksi specifically, check the latest course details in advance, as they may change.
The Atoka Museum presents the history of the Civil War in Oklahoma. The Civil War Cemetery is the only designated Confederate cemetery in Oklahoma. Together with the historic designation of Boggy Depot Park, the museum, cemetery and park offer different points of interest for those interested in cultural history.
Golf and Motorsports
Atoka Trails Golf Club is a public 9-hole golf course with 38 tee sets; three holes border Atoka City Lake. As operations may change, check current operating information before making specific golf plans.
Atoka Motorsports Park hosts races featuring dune buggies, dragsters, Pee-Wee and Junior quads, and adult quads. The event schedule may also change. If a race is important to your plans, check the latest event dates in advance.
