The Rock Island Train Depot is the oldest surviving monumental structure in Chickasha. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1985. This brings local architectural history and a clearly identified historic register listing together in a single building.

Buildings, Collections and Local History

At the Grady County Museum, the focus shifts from the building to the collection. The museum is housed in a former Dixie department store building, built in 1907 and later converted into a museum. Exhibits include railroad artifacts from the Rock Island, Santa Fe and Frisco railroads. The depot and collection thus offer different ways to explore railroad history: here, a surviving structure shapes the impression; there, artifacts from three railroads take center stage.

The Verden Separate School draws attention to African American history in the early 20th century. It is a rare historic one-room schoolhouse. It was built near Verden in 1910 and moved to nearby Chickasha in 2004. The year it was built and the year it was moved mark two separate milestones: the school's origins and its later relocation.

The Hampton House Museum was the original home of Dr. P. J. Hampton. Admission to the museum is free, and visits are by appointment only. Arrange an appointment before your trip.

The Chisholm Trail offers a different scale from individual buildings: in Oklahoma, it generally follows the route of US Highway 81 through Chickasha. The focus thus shifts from individual sites to a route that passes through the city.

Trails, Water and Outdoor Exhibits

Lake Chickasha offers boating opportunities. Shannon Springs Park has walking trails and also hosts the annual Chickasha Festival of Light during the Christmas season. The Christmas light display features 3.5 million lights. The park thus brings together an outdoor activity and a seasonal event highlight.

Danitek Track and Trails has a different focus. The trails are used by ATVs, dirt bikes and bicycles. There are more than six miles of track for ATVs, and the bicycle loop is eight miles long. Comparing the options means considering both the vehicle and the trail layout: ATV trails and a bicycle loop are different offerings, even when their lengths are compared side by side.

The Muscle Car Ranch features a museum of neon and porcelain signs, along with outdoor exhibits of rare muscle cars and motorcycles. Tours are available by request; ask about a tour in advance. Signs, cars and motorcycles offer different points of interest within the same destination.

Downtown and Events Throughout the Year

Downtown Chickasha brings art, dining, gifts and evening music together within a few blocks. The Chickasha Community Theatre offers theatrical productions for the community. Since schedules vary, check performance dates before your visit.

The festivals take place at distinctly different times: the Chickasha Festival of Light is held annually during the Christmas season, while the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival and Rodeo takes place on the second Saturday in August. At the Watermelon Festival, visitors can sample local watermelon varieties such as Black Diamond and Royal Sweet. The program also includes a watermelon seed-spitting contest. Since the annual program may change, check dates and event details before your trip.
