The Battle of Honey Springs was the largest of more than 107 documented armed engagements in Indian Territory. At Honey Springs Battlefield, six hiking trails and 55 information panels are part of the site. Every two years, a multiday reenactment takes place there, featuring military drills, demonstrations, and living history programs. This brings together the historical significance of the battle and various ways of interpreting history.

History and Cultural Heritage

Fort Gibson State Historic Site is located on Oklahoma Highway 80 on the northern edge of Fort Gibson. Fort Gibson Historic Site was the first military post in Indian Territory. Its wooden palisade is a reconstruction. The site includes a museum, visitor center, bookstore, and several historic rooms.

The Five Civilized Tribes Museum focuses on the culture and heritage of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee Creek, and Seminole. Its artifacts relate to each tribe's history in Oklahoma. The museum is housed in a building constructed in 1875 as the first Union Agency. The museum hosts lectures and art exhibitions each year. The Ataloa Lodge Museum is also dedicated to art: it houses more than 20,000 pieces of traditional and contemporary Native American art. The art center was later renamed the Ataloa Lodge Museum in honor of its founder.

The Three Rivers Museum presents the multiethnic history and heritage of the Three Rivers Area in eastern Oklahoma. Behind the museum, visitors can board a diesel locomotive from the 1940s. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., unless otherwise announced on its website or Facebook page. Check the information before your visit. The Three Rivers Area, associated with Muskogee County, is also where the Arkansas, Grand, and Verdigris rivers converge.

Music and film offer further insights into the area's culture. The Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame is located in the historic Frisco Depot in Muskogee. The Roxy Theater is the only remaining Roxy theater in Oklahoma and serves as a venue for film festivals, concerts, screenings, and presentations by local talent. The Oklahoma Movie Hall of Fame offers a glimpse into Oklahoma's film history.

Lakes, Nature, and Activities

Fort Gibson Lake covers 19,990 surface acres and has 225 miles of shoreline. The lake is suitable for boating and fishing; fish species include largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, various types of catfish, and panfish. Its shores have boat ramps, campgrounds, swimming beaches, and marinas. Bald eagles are often spotted at Fort Gibson Lake in winter.

Greenleaf Lake is a 930-acre lake within Greenleaf State Park. The park also has campgrounds, family recreation facilities, and nature trails. Another feature is the natural-stone buildings constructed by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. Fort Gibson Wildlife Management Area offers a different nature experience: it includes a 3,500-acre waterfowl refuge with nine wetland units.

Camp Gruber ORV Park is a 450-acre, year-round facility that welcomes mountain bikers, climbers, hikers, and horseback riders. Its facilities include pavilions, picnic tables, grills, and basic camping. In the 132-acre Honor Heights Park, a rose garden, trails, ponds, and an arboretum are part of the landscape.

Events also give visits a seasonal focus: Honor Heights Park hosts the Azalea Festival each April and Symphony in the Park each June. The Castle of Muskogee includes a 20-acre Renaissance Village. The Oklahoma Renaissance Festival takes place there in May. If you plan to travel specifically for an event, check the exact dates in advance.

Along the 175-mile shoreline of Webbers Falls Reservoir are nine recreation areas. Webbers Falls is also a certified historic site on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. Together with the lakes, museums, and historic sites, this offers a wide range of experiences, from military history and cultural heritage to water sports, nature, and events.
