In Walsh, traces of everyday life stand alongside churches with striking architectural details. The Walsh County Heritage Village focuses on life in times gone by; historic classrooms, reconstructed shops, and churches tell further chapters of regional history. Those especially interested in crafts and earlier ways of life will find different insights here than they would by looking at Gothic Revival architecture or the landscape along the Park River.
Everyday Life and Crafts at the Heritage Village
The Walsh County Heritage Village is a collection of historic buildings and artifacts that illustrates life in the past. It includes a furnished farmhouse and outbuildings, as well as a rural church, a log cabin, and a depot with a caboose. A taxidermy workshop and a working carousel round out the collection. The buildings and objects bring different aspects of earlier life to life, without limiting the story to a single house or occupation.
Special group tours are available by appointment. If you plan to take one, arrange the appointment before your trip and confirm whether it is currently available.
The Walsh County Historical Museum also explores concrete aspects of everyday history. It is housed in the former Minto School: the school building was constructed of bricks made in Minto in 1895. The museum recreates businesses and shops from the past. These include a general store, a blacksmith shop, a saloon, and an ice cream parlor, as well as a photography studio, a beauty salon, and a dental office. The exhibits can thus be explored through very different aspects of community life.
The museum’s seasonal hours are Sundays and holidays from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m., from the Sunday before Memorial Day through the last Sunday in September. Before your visit, check whether this schedule is still in effect.
Churches and Their Architectural History
St. Joseph’s Chapel was built in 1907 and is among the smallest chapels in the United States. Each year, the congregation and visitors gather for worship at the roadside chapel. Visits are limited to daylight hours; check in advance whether access is currently possible.
The St. Stanislaus Church brings together architectural history and distinctive features: built in 1901 in the Gothic Revival style, it has 19 stained-glass windows, numerous statues of saints, a covered pulpit, and carved confessionals. The Historic District includes the church, rectory, and cemetery, as well as St. Anthony Academy, built in 1920. For visitors interested in architecture, the windows and carved details offer a different perspective from the reconstructed world of everyday life in the museum.
Another Gothic Revival church is North Trinity Church, built near Nash in 1893. The construction dates of North Trinity Church, St. Stanislaus Church, and St. Joseph’s Chapel—1893, 1901, and 1907—offer a brief chronological comparison. The buildings also invite different kinds of discovery: Gothic Revival design, stained-glass windows and carved details, or the small chapel with its annual tradition.
Water, Landscapes, and Events
Homme Dam is a 185-acre reservoir on the South Branch of the Park River. There is a fishing pier at the dam, and boating is also listed among the activities available in the recreation area. If you plan to go boating, check current conditions in advance.
Historic Elmwood House sits on 20 acres in an oxbow of the Park River in Grafton. Visits are by appointment only. Arrange an appointment and confirm before you arrive whether access is currently possible.
The Ridge Trail Historic District is a 47.7-acre historic trail system in Pembina and Walsh Counties. It runs along a natural escarpment formed by glacial Lake Agassiz. Thus, the landscape’s formation is also part of the story, alongside the individual buildings: the historic trail system follows an escarpment whose shape dates back to the Ice Age.
The Walsh County Fair is held annually in Park River. If the event matters to your trip, check the dates for the year in question.
