A bridge in rural Foster County shows how closely regional history and transportation routes are connected. Grace City Bridge is significant under Criterion A of the National Register of Historic Places: it is associated with North Dakota counties’ efforts to expand and improve their transportation networks before 1926 by building truss bridges. The bridge crosses the James River on an unnamed county road, one mile southwest of Grace City. Intensively farmed fields and some pastureland shape the rural surroundings at the site.

Traces of County History

Camp Kimball State Historic Site is located at the site of the Sibley Expedition’s field camp on the night of July 22, 1863. The precisely dated event gives this historic site a specific connection to the expedition’s history.

The Foster County Museum documents the history of the county and surrounding areas. Photographs, display cases, farm equipment, and historical records are housed in interconnected buildings. Next to the museum is a one-room schoolhouse, which can be visited by appointment.

The Putnam House offers another highlight: Built by Thomas Putnam in 1907, the house is an American Foursquare. Its program includes exhibitions, performances, classes and demonstrations, as well as other historical, artistic, humanities, family, and community events. Individual events may change. Courthouse Park is east of the Foster County Courthouse property.
