Crowders Mountain State Park is in Gaston County; from its two mountain peaks, views extend across the surrounding Piedmont. This distinctive landscape is a good introduction to a region where nature experiences, local history and seasonal traditions each offer a different perspective.

Mountain Peaks, Riverbanks and Trails

The Ridgeline Trail connects Crowders Mountain State Park with Kings Mountain National Military Park and Kings Mountain State Park in South Carolina. This connection between three parks is key to understanding the trail: it cannot be described solely in terms of the peaks of Crowders Mountain.

The nature trails also offer different points of interest. The Schiele Museum’s Nature Trail is 0.7 miles long and passes through pine forest, mixed hardwood forest, and pond and stream habitats typical of North Carolina’s Piedmont. The Daniel Stowe Conservancy’s Adventure Trail is a 0.4-mile shaded woodland path and an extension of the Kimbrell Family Lost Hollow Children’s Garden. By comparison, the Schiele trail focuses on several habitat types, while the Adventure Trail highlights its woodland setting and connection to the garden.

Outdoor activities in Gaston County include hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. The options range from trail activities to water-based pursuits; you can choose specific activities according to your interests.

The rivers also help with geographical orientation: Mount Holly and Belmont are on the banks of the Catawba River, while Lowell, McAdenville and Cramerton are on the South Fork River. Locating these towns on a map makes it easy to distinguish between the two riverbanks.

Museums and Special Collections

The Gaston County Museum of Art & History was built in 1852. Its Daniel Stowe Carriage House is home to North Carolina’s largest collection of horse-drawn vehicles. The Kessel History Center at Loray Mill offers a different historical focus: it explores the long history of Loyal Mill, one of Gaston County’s largest mills.

At the Schiele Museum, an exhibit presents more than 400 years of Catawba culture, including its adaptation and survival. The James H. Lynn Planetarium, in turn, offers a technical perspective: it uses a fully digital projection system and a curved 360-degree screen. Together, these cultural attractions span a long history of Indigenous culture and digital projection.

December Traditions and Regional Flavors

Every December, McAdenville transforms into Christmas Town U.S.A.® and draws visitors from across the country. The tradition of lights began in 1956; the Yule Log Parade has its own earlier beginnings, dating back to 1949. The two dates therefore mark different parts of the tradition.

Regional food and drink can also be explored through two visitor guides. The Ridgeline Craft Beverage Trail includes breweries, distilleries and wineries in Gaston County as well as Lincoln and Cleveland Counties. The Gaston Co. Cue Trail is a guide to barbecue options in the region. Details and opening hours at individual businesses may change; check the latest information before your visit.

A Broader Perspective

For getting your bearings on the way, Interstate 85 is a useful reference point: it runs through Gaston County and connects the county with cities in the northeastern, southwestern and Midwestern United States. Alongside its varied landscapes, cultural attractions and flavors, the county offers several ways to plan your trip.
