The Lincoln Quilt Trail brings the history and heritage of Lincoln County into view through quilt squares at various public and private locations. These include historic barns and working farms. This highlights the region’s agricultural heritage alongside its individual buildings.

Historic Sites and Art in Lincolnton

In Lincolnton, two historic districts tell different chapters of the area’s architectural history. The South Aspen Street Historic District includes more than 70 historic resources. The West Main Street Historic District preserves Lincolnton’s largest surviving collection of 19th-century buildings from the antebellum period. The number of historic resources in one district and the preserved group of buildings in the other offer two different perspectives on the townscape.

Public art is another discovery: Richard H. Jansen painted the “Threshing Grain” mural in 1938. A walking tour takes visitors to colorful public murals. A historic cemetery tour in Lincolnton, meanwhile, visits three historic cemeteries listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The tours highlight both mural art and places of remembrance.

At the Mundy House, the focus is on a single building: the historic log house dates to the early 19th century. Visitors can tour the house and explore the grounds. Together with the historic districts, it shows how history can be discovered both in individual homes and in larger groups of buildings.

Trails, River Scenery and Parks

Lincoln County is characterized by hilly terrain and gently flowing streams and creeks. Two trails offer different lengths and points of interest: the South Fork Rail Trail is 1.8 miles long, while the Ramsour’s Mill Trail is 0.3 miles long and has a natural surface. The shorter trail crosses the site of the Battle of Ramsour Mill; there is also a canoe and kayak launch along Clark Creek at the trail site.

The South Fork Rail Trail runs along the South Fork of the Catawba River in the 324-acre Rhyne Preserve. The natural area includes mature bottomland forests along the river and a swamp with bald cypress trees. This trail therefore combines a walking route with a variety of landscape features. The Ramsour’s Mill Trail, by contrast, highlights its connection to the battle site.

The parks also offer a range of activities. Beattys Ford Park has a fishing pier that is open daily from sunrise to sunset. West Lincoln Park offers a walking path, while Rock Springs Nature Preserve has walking and hiking trails. Disc golf is the main attraction at Rescue Squad Park. Visitors planning a stay around their interests can choose from fishing, walking and hiking, or disc golf.

Farms and Seasonal Offerings

Farm experiences depend more on the individual farm and the season. Farms in Lincoln County offer berry picking, as well as farm stores and roadside and farm stands. The seasonal landscape also includes apple and peach orchards, as well as blackberry, strawberry, and blueberry farms. This variety connects agricultural businesses with different visitor experiences, though not all offerings may be available at the same time.

At one farm, visitors can sample goat’s milk cheese and take some home. Whether a farm participates and whether the product is available can vary; check before your trip. This makes it easier to plan a farm visit than a seasonal offering that may differ from one farm to another.
