Historic Halifax and the Halifax Resolves
During regular opening hours, guided tours are offered through several authentically restored and furnished buildings in Historic Halifax. As tour arrangements may change, check the latest visitor information before your visit. The self-guided tour also includes access to the Underground Railroad Trail.
On April 12, a document was unanimously adopted at Historic Halifax that later became known as the Halifax Resolves. It is considered the first official action by an entire colony recommending independence from England. A visit therefore combines insights into preserved historic buildings with a specific event from colonial history.
The Roanoke Canal: History and Trail
The Roanoke Canal Museum features exhibits on the history of the Roanoke River Valley, the engineering achievement of the canal, and its later use as a source of hydropower. The remains of the Roanoke Canal were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
The Roanoke Canal Trail follows the canal’s original towpath for 7.2 miles between Roanoke Lake and Weldon. Take the 7.2-mile route into account when planning your visit. The trail is open daily from sunrise to sunset; operating information may change. Check for current updates before your visit.

At Sylvan Heights Bird Park, you can see more than 2,000 waterfowl, parrots, toucans, flamingos, and other exotic birds. Collections and species composition may change. The Landing Zone offers a different experience: visitors can interact with hundreds of friendly parakeets and a flock of Caribbean flamingos. Which species are available may vary by season and weather.
The park regularly offers educational programs and special events. Dates change; if you want to plan around a program, check the current schedule in advance. This lets you plan your visit around a specific event as well as wildlife viewing, if one fits your travel dates.
Medoc Mountain State Park in Halifax County offers a very different perspective on the region. It sits atop a 325-foot-high remnant of a once-mighty mountain range that formed 350 million years ago.
River, Trails, and Activities
River Falls Park has a viewpoint with sweeping views of the Roanoke River rapids. At Weldon Boat Landing, visitors can navigate the rapids by kayak and canoe. River conditions and access to the boat landing may vary; check for current updates before setting out. The viewpoint and paddling offer two different ways to experience the Roanoke River.
The Halifax County 4-H Rural Life Center has 6 to 7 miles of trails for horseback riding and hiking. Lake Gaston is stocked with several game fish species, including striped bass, largemouth bass, crappie, sunfish, and several species of catfish. Fish populations and local regulations may change.
