At Hollow Rock Nature Park, the wetlands beside New Hope Creek offer good opportunities to observe birds and other wildlife. The park has 1.5 miles of trails. Another destination for walkers is the New Hope Creek Bottomlands Trail, an easy loop with sections of boardwalk and natural-surface trail. Check trail conditions before your visit.
Wildlife Viewing and Trails
New Hope Creek Preserve focuses on bottomland forest. The preserve contains one of the most species-rich bottomland forests in central North Carolina. Little River Preserve covers 359 acres along the Little River.
Durham County’s Open Space Program manages four public parks and nature preserves. These nature destinations have different county connections: Little River Regional Park is a joint project of Durham and Orange counties. Eno River State Park lies in both counties and is one of the state parks along the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail. Falls Lake State Recreation Area, by contrast, is in Durham and Wake counties and offers seven access areas to the reservoir.
Falls Lake also has more than 300 campsites; availability may change. If camping is an option for you, check availability in advance. This helps you distinguish between destinations for trails or wildlife viewing and an area with designated campsites when planning.
Culture and History
The Museum of Life and Science offers daily programs for visitors. Sarah P. Duke Gardens offers a different perspective: the 55-acre botanical garden is located in the center of the Duke University campus. Here, a specific visitor program and an expansive garden setting offer different points of emphasis.
Pauli Murray’s childhood home was built in 1898 by her Fitzgerald grandparents. The Pauli Murray Center offers public guided and self-guided tours of the home where Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray grew up. Check the schedule before your visit.
Historic Stagville preserves a house built around 1799, enslaved people’s quarters dating to around 1851, a barn from 1860 and 165 acres of land. The site tells the history of slavery. Duke Homestead preserves the early home, factories and farm where Washington Duke first grew and processed tobacco. Together, the two sites offer insights into different aspects of regional history.
