History, Architecture and Gardens

The Belmont Historical Society’s Historical House Museum features permanent exhibits of furniture, artifacts, photographs, and other objects related to Belmont’s history. The story spans from the earliest nomadic groups to pass through the area to the textile era. The selection of objects on display may change.

The Mary Help of Christians Basilica at Belmont Abbey is a church in the Romanesque Revival style. Built in 1892, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the day, it welcomes visitors for Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, confession, and private prayer. Check current visitor information before your visit.

The Gardens at Daniel Stowe were established in 1991 and opened in 1999. They feature seasonal blooms and special floral displays.

Trails and Water

The Duke Kimbrell Trail, formerly called the Seven Oaks Preserve Trail, is a scenic 3.15-mile route with natural-surface trails and paved sections. It runs along Lake Wylie, passes the Daniel Stowe Conservancy, and parallels South New Hope Road. The Conservancy is a 380-acre protected landscape in Belmont on the shore of Lake Wylie.

For a route with a stated distance, consider the Duke Kimbrell Trail. If you’d rather choose by activity, the Rocky Branch Park Trail System in Belmont offers opportunities for hiking, running, and mountain biking for all skill levels.

Two parks offer different ways to enjoy the water. Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park is a 10-acre park in Belmont on the Catawba River. Visitors can fish, paddle, and kayak, or relax on the pier or swings. Southpoint Access Recreation Area is a 68-acre park on Lake Wylie with Belmont’s public swimming beach. Check the beach’s seasonal operating schedule before your trip.

City Park and Market

Stowe Park in downtown Belmont features a large fountain, two children’s play areas, picnic shelters, uncovered tables, walking paths, and restrooms. In the same park, the Belmont Farmers Market offers fresh produce, baked goods, and handmade items every Sunday. Check the market’s seasonal schedule before your trip.
