Spring Lake can be explored through a variety of themes: a park on a county boundary, a memorial site with annual ceremonies, public art, and opportunities to be active. Nature and history also offer different points of interest. Which ones you focus on depends on whether you are more interested in places of remembrance, a particular program, or the landscape. For events and recreational activities, it is worth checking the relevant dates before your trip.

Orientation and Remembrance

Mendoza Park is on Highway 87, just south of the boundary between Cumberland County and Harnett County. Its location on the road and near the county boundary provides a specific reference point for understanding Spring Lake’s geography.

Remembrance and tribute are at the heart of Veterans Park. The park began as a community project intended to honor veterans and recognize their service, as well as the sacrifices made by them and their families. Today, it offers a place for quiet reflection and learning. Special ceremonies honoring veterans and the U.S. Armed Forces can also be held there. Visitors interested in this form of remembrance will find a place whose purpose extends explicitly beyond any single event.

The annual calendar includes two ceremonies for placing commemorative stones: one on Memorial Day and one on Veterans Day. The two dates are tied to different days of remembrance. If attending a ceremony is important to your travel plans, check the relevant date in advance.

Public Art

Two works offer different perspectives. The “Home of the Airborne” mural honors Spring Lake’s support for the XVIII Airborne Corps and Special Operations Command. The “Moving Upward” sculpture, by contrast, uses interconnected geometric shapes. From every angle, it points upward. Together, they place a specific connection to the named military organizations alongside an abstract visual language. Visitors interested in public art can consider both the subject matter and the different approaches to design.

Nature and History at Carvers Creek State Park

Two distinct themes come together at Carvers Creek State Park: the longleaf pine ecosystem at both park entrances is a habitat for the federally endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. At the same time, one entrance to the state park encompasses James Stillman Rockefeller’s former winter estate and farm. Nature and historic land use thus offer different perspectives on the same state park. This distinction can help with planning if you are specifically interested in one of these themes.

Activities and Dates

A scenic quarter-mile walking trail runs through the Spring Lake Community Center. There are designated times for dogs on leashes. Since the rules may change, check the current hours before your walk.

At the Spring Lake Recreation and Senior Center, Youth Open Gym teaches children the fundamentals of basketball on Saturdays. A volleyball clinic focuses on basic volleyball techniques. The two programs therefore offer different sports. Since program times may change, check the respective schedules before visiting.

A 2024 announcement for the Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run gives the route as 2.5 miles, ending at Veterans Park at the corner of Ruth Street and Main Street. If this run interests you as part of your trip, check the dates for the next edition; the route information refers to the announcement at the time.
