In Caldwell County, elevations range from 900 to 5,964 feet above sea level. This range draws attention to diverse landscapes and experiences: Wilson Creek offers river and water activities, trails lead through the forest and surrounding area, and museums and parks tell stories of history, literature and art. You can shape your stay around a particular interest instead of trying to fit every theme into a set itinerary.
Wilson Creek, Forest and Trails
Wilson Creek lies in the northwestern part of Caldwell County in Pisgah National Forest and was designated a Wild and Scenic River on August 18, 2000. A 15.4-mile stretch of lower Wilson Creek is used for fishing, swimming, hiking and kayaking. Brown Mountain Beach Road runs parallel to the lower sections of the river. Caldwell County also established a visitor and education center at Wilson Creek, which officially opened to the public on October 14, 2002.
At Tuttle Educational State Forest, you’ll find a variety of pine and hardwood stands, rolling terrain and clear streams. The forest is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Well-marked trails pass ecology exhibits and interpretive signs about the ecology of managed forests. Check current access to the forest before your visit.
Lakeside Park in southern Caldwell County offers a different kind of scenery. It is in Granite Falls, on Lake Rhodhiss, and covers 72 acres. Amenities include a one-mile trail, a waterfront path, an accessible fishing platform and binoculars for wildlife viewing. Here, the park’s features combine exercise by the water with an opportunity to take a closer look at the surroundings.
In Lenoir, the Greenway offers more than 9 miles of trails and paths for running, walking, cycling and mountain biking. The Zacks Fork Mountain Biking Trail is designed for mountain bikes; the public park is open to all users. Check the trail’s current status before your trip. The two offerings have different focuses: the Greenway accommodates several types of activity, while Zacks Fork is specifically designed for mountain bikes.
Discover History and Literature
Fort Defiance was built between 1788 and 1792 and served as a plantation, a U.S. post office and a lumber business. It was restored to recreate the appearance of the house in 1792. Today, Fort Defiance offers guided and self-guided tours, special events and educational field trips. The focus is on the historic house and its grounds, as well as life in the Yadkin Valley in the 18th and 19th centuries. Since schedules and availability may vary, it’s best to check before your visit.
The Mitford Museum is housed in the Hudson Arts Center, a renovated 1942 Art Deco school building. Museum founder and author Jan Karon attended first through seventh grade there. At the museum, you can learn more about the books, challenges and influences that shaped the small-town world of her fifteen bestselling Mitford novels. The building and exhibit thus connect a specific place from Karon’s school years with the literary world of her novels.
