Sunset Beach combines coastal scenery with a distinctive natural destination: Bird Island Reserve encompasses sandy white beaches, tall natural dunes, salt marshes, and tidal creeks. Bird Island is an undeveloped barrier island between the Town of Sunset Beach and Little River Inlet in South Carolina. Sunset Beach is the southernmost beach on the North Carolina coast; South Carolina lies beyond it. When choosing a place to stay in Sunset Beach, you can consider whether you want to focus primarily on the beach, nature, or local history.

Bird Island and Beach Trails

Bird Island Reserve is open to visitors year-round. From Sunset Beach, you can reach Bird Island by boat, on foot, or by bicycle along the beach. Bicycles are allowed on the ocean beach in the reserve. This means you can choose between different ways of getting there; bicycle use is specifically permitted on this beach.

From the beach access at 40th Street, the Kindred Spirit Mailbox is about 1.4 miles away on foot; the round trip is 2.8 miles. A nature trail is about 1.5 miles from this beach access. The stated distances are close to one another, but refer to different destinations. The Kindred Spirit Mailbox contains notebooks in which people share stories. This makes the walk a way to experience the area’s storytelling side, while the nature trail offers a different focus.

Park, Pier, and Local History

Sunset Beach Town Park opened in May 2015. Its facilities include a paved parking lot, restrooms, a picnic shelter, and a fishing pier. Brick paths wind through five acres of live oak trees. Unlike the reserve’s dunes, salt marshes, and tidal creeks, the focus here is on landscaped paths and park facilities. Sunset Beach Pier extends 900 feet into the ocean. It has a snack bar, a fishing tackle shop, and accessible access with free wheelchairs.

Local history also offers a distinct connection to the island: beginning in 1958, the iconic Sunset Beach Pontoon Bridge connected the mainland to the island. Nature-related themes are also reflected in the Sunset Beach Turtle Watch Program, which recruits volunteers to monitor turtle nests at Sunset Beach. The Town of Sunset Beach is also part of the North Carolina Birding Trail.

An Annual Festival in October

Sunset at Sunset is the Town of Sunset Beach’s community festival and takes place every year on the first Saturday in October. More than 100 vendors, artisans, food vendors, and nonprofit organizations take part; bands also perform. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event date in advance. This lets you consider the recurring event as a focus in its own right, alongside the beach, reserve, and local history, without conflating these different reasons to visit.
