Offerings vary in trail length, scenery and programming, so you can choose the interests you want to shape your trip.
Parks, Trails and Scenery
Founders Park includes a playground, pavilion, stage, picnic tables, benches and open green spaces. It also has a 0.6-mile paved multi-use trail. The park thus combines a clearly measured trail option with several named facilities and open spaces.
Westgate Nature Park covers nearly 150 acres of wetlands and upland areas. Its paved, elevated boardwalk trails are 0.3 miles long and ten feet wide. By comparison, the paved multi-use trail at Founders Park is twice as long, at 0.6 miles; the construction types also differ. Westgate also has an outdoor classroom where you can learn about Leland’s wetlands and ecosystems. Its scenery and educational offering provide a different focus from the facilities and green spaces at Founders Park.
Another option adds to the trail offerings: Leland Disc Golf Park has a 12-hole course on just over 13 acres next to Sturgeon Creek. Here, the number of holes offers a different point of reference from the trail lengths at the two parks.
Water and Birdwatching
Cypress Cove Park is Leland’s first water access point. It is designed for launching kayaks, canoes and small jon boats. Leland has several launch sites for canoes, kayaks and fishing boats. For anyone weighing activities for their stay, this provides information both about a specific water access point and about several types of watercraft.
Birdwatching is another nature-focused interest: In Leland, you can spot brown pelicans, double-crested cormorants, herons, ibises, American oystercatchers and terns. This offers a distinct angle for trip planning alongside boating.
Culture Throughout the Year
The program at the Leland Cultural Arts Center ranges from pottery, theater, painting and jewelry-making to literature, health and wellness, environmental education, and offerings that enrich community life. The center’s gallery features changing exhibitions each month. The center also hosts the annual Instructor Showcase, Youth Art Month exhibition and LCAC Student Show.
The gallery and events follow different schedules: exhibitions change monthly, while the three shows mentioned take place annually. If culture is a focus of your trip, you can take these timing differences into account when planning.
Live in Leland was launched as a concert and entertainment series in the Founders Park amphitheater. Check the dates before your trip if you’d like to include the series in your plans.
Golf
Magnolia Greens Golf Club offers 27 holes of golf and has hosted several PGA and USGA qualifying tournaments. Golf is therefore a distinct focus alongside park trails, water activities and culture. The number of holes describes the offering in concrete terms; the tournament history adds to the club’s profile.
