On Fire Island, it is worth planning around specific locations: Watch Hill and Barrett Beach/Talisman have different access options, while nature, hiking, and maritime history each offer their own focus. So when looking for accommodation, consider which of these experiences you want to shape your trip; access information for one location does not automatically apply to other parts of the island.

A Natural Area with Two Distinct Profiles

The Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness is the only federally designated wilderness area in New York State. The Sunken Forest is considered a rare ecological community found nowhere else in the world. These two distinctive features offer different points of focus: the Wilderness designation describes a federal status; the Sunken Forest is notable for its ecological rarity. If you are looking for more than a general landscape description for your nature trip, you can use these differences as practical points of reference.

Watch Hill: Access and Camping

Watch Hill is accessible only by the Watch Hill Ferry, a private boat, or on foot. So if Watch Hill is your destination, include your choice of access in your plans. If you plan to take the ferry, check the schedule before departure.

The Watch Hill Family Tent Campground has 26 sites on sand and operates seasonally. If you plan to stay there, take the season into account when choosing your dates and check availability in advance.

The Watch Hill Visitor Center has information about upcoming ranger-led kayak tours through the salt marsh. The program may vary by season; ask there about upcoming dates if you would like to include a kayak tour in your plans.

Barrett Beach/Talisman: Access and Beach Trail

The timing of access information for Barrett Beach/Talisman matters. On June 17, 2026, the National Park Service reported that a dock was closed. At that time, the location was accessible only by private boat, on foot, or by charter ferry from Patchogue or Sayville. Check current access information before traveling.

A boardwalk at Barrett Beach/Talisman crosses the island to the ocean beach. It connects the route across the island with the seaside destination.

Hiking, Backcountry Camping, and Maritime History

The Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness offers excellent hiking along the route of the former Burma Road. Backcountry camping is possible via Watch Hill and at points farther west. Backcountry camping requires its own preparation: check the applicable permits and conditions before your trip.

The Fire Island Lighthouse has exhibits on Fire Island’s maritime history. This is a different focus from the nature themes of the Wilderness and the Sunken Forest, and may be a consideration when choosing your experiences.
