A complete portico, nine fluorescent light works and more than 40 acres of protected grassland give Bridgehampton very different cultural and landscape features. For planning, you can distinguish the attractions by interest: historic architecture and art sit alongside nature experiences and museums, each with its own focus.

Architecture and Art

The Nathaniel Rogers House is a Greek Revival building and one of the few surviving houses of this style on Long Island with a complete portico. This is also known as a temple front. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also intended to serve as an active center for historical research and for programs that share and honor the history and cultural traditions of Bridgehampton and neighboring communities.

Dia Bridgehampton offers a different artistic focus: at the Dan Flavin Art Institute, the institution maintains a permanent installation of nine works using fluorescent light. Annual exhibitions are also presented in the gallery on the first floor. A permanent installation and a recurring exhibition program thus sit side by side—two different aspects of Bridgehampton’s art offerings.

Nature and Activity

The South Fork Natural History Museum & Nature Center adjoins the 40-acre Vineyard Field Preserve, where visitors can take nature walks. Admission to SOFO is not required to access Vineyard Field. Access rules may change, so check them before your visit. Vineyard Field is one of the few protected open grassland areas remaining in the Town of Southampton and covers more than 40 acres.

Vineyard Field hosts hikes and walks, nature classes and school visits, as well as photography and plein-air painting throughout the year. The program also includes monthly full moon walks and occasional comet-viewing events. The different frequencies help with planning: full moon walks are scheduled monthly, while comet-viewing events take place occasionally. Individual programs may change; check the latest dates for time-sensitive activities.

Another landscape option is Sayre Park, a 78-acre property in Bridgehampton. It extends from Snake Hollow Road to Long Pond and provides access to the shore. These stated endpoints and shoreline access give the park a different geographic setting from Vineyard Field’s protected grassland.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

At the South Fork Natural History Museum & Nature Center’s Marine Touch Tank, you can hold sea stars, crabs, sea urchins and whelks in the water. The Children’s Museum of the East End, by contrast, offers exhibits that encourage discovery and playful interaction with energy. Its 7,000 square feet of exhibit space is designed for children ages 0 to 7 and invites them to imagine, explore and engage with energy through play.

The Children’s Museum of the East End’s ship exhibit also offers hands-on play: there are games in the galley and an experience of rough seas at the ship’s wheel. The museum opened at its current Bridgehampton location in October 2005. In comparison, the two museums focus on marine animals at SOFO and age-appropriate exhibits and a ship exhibit at the Children’s Museum.
