Seneca County lies between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. The history is especially tangible in Seneca Falls: the first women’s rights convention in the United States was held there in 1848. The Women’s Rights National Historical Park preserves and interprets historically and culturally significant sites, buildings and events connected with the struggle for women’s equality. It is not just a date that takes center stage, but a collection of places where history unfolds.

Women’s Rights History in the Places Where It Happened

The park includes a visitor center, historic homes and Wesleyan Chapel. The visitor center is accessible to wheelchair users. The Elizabeth Cady Stanton House was known as “Grassmere” and “the Center of the Rebellion.” It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965; after being donated to the National Park Service, it became part of the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in 1982. These dates mark different milestones: the house’s designation and, later, its inclusion in the park.

Wesleyan Chapel brings together several layers of history, too. It was renovated in 2009 to restore its approximate appearance in 1848. Today, many people visit it as a place of pilgrimage. Special events, lectures and various exhibitions are held there throughout the year. Check the current calendar before your trip if you have a particular program in mind. Alongside its historic design, the chapel offers another way to engage with the park’s themes.

Culture and Recurring Events

The Seneca Falls It’s a Wonderful Life Museum opened on December 10, 2010. Seneca Falls also hosts the It’s A Wonderful Life Festival every year on the second weekend of December. The exact dates may vary from year to year; if you’re planning your trip around the festival, check the dates for that year. A fixed opening date and an annual event thus sit side by side.

Winemaking and Wildlife Habitats

More than two dozen wineries in Seneca County produce Finger Lakes wines. Winemaking adds a distinctive regional note alongside the area’s historical themes. The Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge offers a very different view of the landscape: wetlands, grasslands, shrublands and forests provide habitat for migratory birds, as well as places to rest, feed and nest. The variety of landscapes is also reflected in the different roles they play for the birds.

The refuge includes a 3-mile Wildlife Drive auto tour route. Its seasonal operation depends on the weather. Keep both conditions in mind if you plan to take the drive. Camping and boating are among the main recreational activities at Sampson State Park—a different focus from the migratory bird habitats at the refuge.

Military history is also present in Seneca County in different ways. Through artifacts, the Sampson State Park Military Museum explores the site’s training history during its military service in World War II and the postwar period; museum hours are seasonal. At Deer Haven Park, guided tours offer insights into the herd of white Seneca deer and the military history of this mysterious place. Check the availability of tours before your trip.
