Woodbury can be explored through different local connections: landscape, a specific section of the Long Path and history. Schunemunk Mountain borders the town to the northwest, and the Hudson Highlands to the southeast; Woodbury Creek winds through the three hamlets. Section 8 of the Long Path runs from NY Route 32 in the Town of Woodbury to the Heritage Trail in Monroe. The Gatehouse Museum & Learning Center and the Woodbury Common Premium Outlet Center also add a historical site and a tourist attraction in Central Valley.
Landscape between Schunemunk and the Hudson Highlands
The cardinal directions clearly distinguish the two landscape features: Schunemunk Mountain borders Woodbury to the northwest, and the Hudson Highlands to the southeast. Woodbury Creek adds another point of reference, winding through the three hamlets. Here, two bordering features meet a waterway that meanders through the settlement pattern. To get a sense of the landscape, you can distinguish between the directions of the two adjoining areas and the creek’s course through the hamlets.
Long Path: Section 8
Section 8 of the Long Path offers more precise route details. It runs from NY Route 32 in the Town of Woodbury to the Heritage Trail in Monroe. At Schunemunk Mountain, the trail climbs and passes scenic overlooks, including Little Knob; it also reaches the entrance to Gonzaga Park. Together, the starting point, destination and named features give a concrete picture of the section: the route extends from NY Route 32 to the Heritage Trail and passes scenic overlooks on Schunemunk. If you’re including the trail in your plans, check current trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.
Gonzaga Park across three towns
Gonzaga Park is a 216-acre county park in the towns of Blooming Grove, Monroe and Woodbury. Section 8 of the Long Path reaches its entrance. This describes the park on two levels: its size and the three towns place it in context, while the route provides an additional specific point of reference. This cross-town context helps avoid attributing Gonzaga Park to Woodbury alone.
Gatehouse: Exhibitions and local history
The Gatehouse Museum & Learning Center offers a different focus. It presents annual exhibitions on Woodbury’s history; check which program is currently running before your visit. The building itself also has a clearly dated historical connection: in 1973, the US government transferred the Gatehouse to the Town of Woodbury for use in youth activities. The exhibitions and the transfer offer different ways to explore local history: one through the annual exhibitions, the other through the building’s intended use when it was transferred.
Woodbury Common Premium Outlet Center
The Woodbury Common Premium Outlet Center is a tourist attraction in the Town of Woodbury, located in Central Valley. Central Valley specifies the center’s location; Woodbury identifies the municipality associated with the attraction. This is a different focus from the landscape features or the history at the Gatehouse: the outlet center is a distinct tourist attraction within the town.
