Brooklyn Bridge Park covers 85 acres. Rolling hills, waterfront promenades, lush gardens and impressive city views shape its landscape. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden offers a different focus: as a botanical garden in the city, it brings people together with the world of plants; it was founded in 1910. Both places offer different perspectives on nature for a trip to Kings—a landscaped waterfront and a garden where plants take centre stage. The discovery therefore begins not with just one kind of outing, but with the question of which setting interests you most.
Birdwatching and discovering nature
The Prospect Park Audubon Center is the nation’s first urban Audubon Center. Its nature programmes include family nature walks for birdwatching; binoculars and bird guides are provided. As the walks may be scheduled seasonally, it is worth checking the event dates in advance. Another historic attraction in Prospect Park is the carousel, dating from 1912. Its elaborately carved horses, lions, giraffes and deer give the carousel its own visual character. Operating days and prices may change, so check them before planning your visit.
Boat rentals and café at LeFrak Center
LeFrak Center at Lakeside offers rowboat and kayak rentals on Brooklyn’s only lake. Rental operations and conditions may vary depending on the season and weather. If you are planning to rent a boat, check the current conditions in advance. Duck Island Cafe & Bar is also located at LeFrak Center at Lakeside. It has indoor and outdoor seating and serves lunch and dinner. Menus may change.
Explore history on guided tours
Green-Wood offers expertly guided trolley tours through its historic landscape. The guided walks by Coney Island USA explore a different historical focus: they delve into the history of Coney Island and its connections to the rise of the roller coaster, the amusement park and the hot dog. These are two distinct ways to explore history—a tour through a historic landscape and a walk exploring the origins of influential forms of entertainment.
Lefferts Historic House is an 18th-century farmhouse museum with a working garden, historical artefacts and indoor and outdoor exhibitions. ReImagine Lefferts addresses the lives, resistance and resilience of the Indigenous people of Lenapehoking and the Africans enslaved by the Lefferts family. The house’s history also includes a specific figure: at least 25 people were enslaved there between its construction in 1783 and 1827. The house’s themes connect material history with questions of enslavement, resistance and cultural resilience.
Art history from antiquity to the present
The Brooklyn Museum holds its collections in trust for the benefit of the public. In many respects, they represent the global history of art from antiquity to the present. The museum was founded in 1823 as the Brooklyn Apprentices’ Library, with the mission of educating Brooklyn’s diverse community. Its history brings together an educational mission dating back to its founding and a broad view of art from different parts of the world and across the ages.
