Hamilton County lies in the heart of Adirondack Park. Public lands make up 95 percent of the county, covering more than one million acres of forests, mountains and lakes. In the Moose River Plains Complex, this landscape is made tangible by a marked trail network and seasonal road access: the area covers 79,487 acres and is part of the Adirondack Forest Preserve. Its marked and maintained trails extend for about 130 miles.
Trails and road access: keep the season in mind
The Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road, also called Moose River Plains Road, is a seasonal access road. For 23 miles, it runs from the vicinity of Inlet through the Moose River Plains to the vicinity of Indian Lake. Check road conditions before driving. In the Complex, biking is permitted on all roads and trails, with one exception: the roads and trails in the Little Moose Mountain Wilderness. All hiking trails are open to cross-country skiing; nearly 16 miles are designated exclusively for cross-country skiing.
This means different ways of getting around—and one specific biking exception—coexist in the same area. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether hiking, biking or cross-country skiing is your priority, then focus on the relevant route and season. The designated cross-country ski trails are distinct from the general permission to cross-country ski on hiking trails.
Canoe route and bike race
The Adirondack Canoe Route is a 90-mile section of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail between Old Forge and Saranac Lake. Parts of the route pass through the Moose River Plains Complex and its immediate surroundings. The Adirondack Canoe Classic takes place on this route: an annual three-day race held on the weekend after Labor Day. If you’re planning your trip around the race, confirm the date with the organizer.
Another annual event is the Black Fly Challenge bike race between Inlet and Indian Lake. More than half of the 40-mile route follows roads in the Moose River Plains Complex. Comparing the two events highlights their different focuses: the Canoe Classic centers on the canoe route, while the Black Fly Challenge follows a bike course that partly runs along roads in the Complex. The date for this race should also be confirmed with the organizer.
Winter activities and nature challenges
Oak Mountain Ski Center has 22 trails and a vertical drop of 650 feet. From the 2,400-foot summit, the panoramic view spans 270 degrees. There’s also a four-lane snow tubing run and miles of snowshoe trails. Oak Mountain Bike Park offers nine trails in the warmer months; check its seasonal operations before your trip. This lets you plan around winter activities or a visit in the warmer months without treating both as year-round offerings.
The Hamilton County Challenges also bring different nature themes together. The Fire Tower Challenge includes seven fire towers; check their condition and access again before hiking. For the Waterfall Challenge, 19 waterfalls of varying difficulty are each assigned a point value from 1 to 4. The Birding Challenge lists 55 bird species found in the Adirondack region and scores them from 1 to 10. The Wildlife Challenge requires 100 points to earn a Hamilton County Wildlife Pin. These point scales belong to different challenges: one covers waterfalls and varying difficulty levels, while another covers bird species and their scores.
If you’d rather plan birdwatching as part of an organized program, the Adirondack Boreal Birding Festival is a three-day event in Hamilton County. The program includes birding hikes, walks, safaris, excursions and seminars. Check event dates and registration requirements before your trip.
Culture at Blue Mountain Lake
Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake includes more than 20 historic and contemporary buildings on 121 acres overlooking Blue Mountain Lake. Visitors can row an authentic guideboat there or take a family-friendly hike to Minnow Pond. Weather and trail conditions may affect these outdoor activities.
Plan the rest of your trip around your chosen season and the conditions for each activity.
