After 1879, Gardnerville became a center for 1,870 Danish immigrants. This historic connection is a starting point for exploring not only the town’s history, but also its museums, art, events and Basque cuisine. When planning your visit, it’s worth keeping the different topics and trail options, along with their respective conditions, in mind.

History and Culture

The Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center is located in Gardnerville, in the historic Douglas County High School building. The museum’s satellite site, the Edwin L. Wiegand Ranching & Agricultural Heritage Exhibit, opened on August 1, 2020. The museum also includes a Washo Room with Washo artifacts. This brings agricultural heritage and Washo artifacts together as distinct topics.

The East Fork Gallery in Gardnerville is an exhibition space for local and regional artists. It features visual art, photography, ceramics, glass, jewelry, greeting cards and gifts, as well as art classes. The history of the former East Fork Hotel can also be placed in context: its story began at the site with the saloon and residence “The Other Place,” built by George Brown in January and February 1891. The hotel and associated buildings were demolished in 2014.

Trails and Outdoor Activities

The Pinyon Trail is a moderately difficult 5.3-mile loop open to hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders. Along the route, there are opportunities to observe wildlife, including wild horses, migrating raptors and eagles. Which animals you see may vary.

The Martin Slough Trail offers a different kind of route: the paved trail connects downtown Gardnerville with Minden. At Gilman Pond along the trail, visitors can walk and fish; seasonal fishing conditions may vary. Comparing the two trails, the Pinyon Trail is characterized by its moderately difficult loop, while the Martin Slough Trail offers a paved connection between two towns and activities at the pond.

Strolling through Gardnerville also offers a glimpse of the town’s character: visitors can walk along flower-lined streets and see historic buildings on and around Main Street. Heritage Park Gardens offers chess and checkers with larger-than-life game pieces, as well as a labyrinth.

Events and Regional Cuisine

Heritage Park hosts Movies in the Park, Fall Fest/Coffin Races and the Carson Valley Christmas Kickoff. Dates for individual events may vary. Carson Valley Days is a recurring four-day summer event in Gardnerville. The program includes a carnival, parade of floats, live music, tournaments and local food; the tradition dates back to 1910. Most activities take place at Lampe Park, 1324 Waterloo Lane, in Gardnerville, Nevada.

Basque cuisine and Basque food remain a culinary attraction in Gardnerville. The Lahontan National Fish Hatchery is located nearby, south of town. Its visitor center is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., except on federal holidays.
