Fort Peck Lake and the Landscape

With 1,500 miles of shoreline, Fort Peck Lake offers a vast expanse. Activities on the lake include camping, boating, fishing, and hunting, as well as sightseeing cruises and wildlife watching. This brings together water-based activities and nature observation; you can decide which to make the focus of your trip based on your interests.

The Fort Peck Project includes 19 recreation areas and nine campgrounds. The campgrounds range from developed sites with full amenities to basic backcountry sites. This gives you a concrete choice between different types of camping when planning your trip.

At Perch Point, three miles of paved nature trails run along the Missouri River and through the surrounding woodland. From Perch Point, you can enjoy panoramic views to the east of Fort Peck Dam and Fort Peck Lake.

Bitter Creek WSA offers a different perspective on nature. It is located in Valley County in northeastern Montana and is a designated stop on Montana’s Northeastern Plains Birding Trail. While Perch Point is defined by its river, woodland, and paved trails, Bitter Creek’s place on the birding trail connects it with birdwatching.

History from Dinosaurs to the Railroad

The Fort Peck Interpretive Center tells the history of the Fort Peck region, from dinosaurs to the construction of the dam. It is one of fourteen stops on the Montana Dinosaur Trail. Here, the region’s long history meets a designated focus on dinosaur history.

The Valley County Pioneer Museum offers a different historical perspective: founded in 1972, it is dedicated to preserving the county’s history. The museum houses an Assiniboine collection and features exhibits on the railroad and agriculture. Glasgow was also founded as a railroad town in the late 19th century, so the railroad features both as a museum subject and in the city’s founding history.

Another historic landmark is the Fort Peck Theatre, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Fort Peck is also part of a self-guided driving tour of sites along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.

Glasgow and Its Attractions

Glasgow OHV is a 40-acre recreation area one mile north of Glasgow, open to off-road riding on ATVs and motorcycles. The terrain offers different challenges for riders: experienced riders can find challenging climbs and natural jumps, while beginners have flat areas and gentle slopes.

In Glasgow itself, Sullivan Park is the largest park operated by the city, with areas and activities for all ages. Centennial Park features hills, disc golf, an outdoor shelter, and a playground. To help you find your way around the city, the “Parks & Trails” map shows parks, trails, and points of interest in Glasgow.

About 12 miles southwest of Glasgow is Paulo Reservoir, where you can fish for largemouth bass and enjoy family outings. The approximate distance and direction give you a concrete reference point if you are considering this excursion as part of your trip.

From Glasgow, you can reach the Fort Peck Project by taking Highway 24 south for 17 miles to Fort Peck.
