St. Peter’s Catholic Church combines a long construction history with a distinctive regional material. The church was built in 1895 and enlarged in 1938. During the expansion, its exterior walls were clad in scoria, a type of lava rock common in the region’s Badlands. The National Register of Historic Places recognizes it as a unique adaptation of a simple vernacular design. Its design, later alteration, and building material offer a concrete introduction to the architectural history of Wibaux County.

Commercial District and Building History

The Wibaux Commercial Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Its history traces the transition from the livestock industry to agricultural trade. Closely grouped, one- and two-story brick buildings constructed between 1905 and 1917 replaced most of the wood-frame buildings. The architecture features transitional elements between Classical Revival and the more modern commercial design of the Prairie School. This makes it possible to trace the change not only through the economy, but also through building types and design movements.

Individual buildings add specific dates and former uses to this picture. The Woodburn Building was built in 1917; the upper floor housed the Masonic Temple. The Clark Hardware Company building was constructed in 1916 as a one-story brick-and-stucco building. The Smith Saloon is considered an outstanding example of early 20th-century commercial architecture. Together, these buildings represent different facets of the historic commercial district, each with its own distinctive features.

The Wibaux House also offers a distinct perspective on the area’s history. It was built in 1892 as Pierre Wibaux’s office building and is a substantial Victorian-era house. The National Register recognizes it as evidence of European capital in the open-range cattle industry and as a property of state significance. To understand its importance, both its architecture and the economic history of cattle ranching are relevant.

Museum, Park, and Local Keepsakes

The Pierre Wibaux Museum is housed in an office building constructed by Pierre Wibaux and Henry Boice in 1892. Several antiques in the collection belonged to Pierre Wibaux and his wife, Mary Ellen (Cooper) Wibaux. The Wibaux Museum Complex is located in downtown Wibaux at 112 East Orgain Avenue. Wibaux Park surrounds the museum complex; its garden features a grotto made from native rocks such as agate, petrified wood, and lava. Personal keepsakes and landscaping with regional rocks are thus brought together.

You can walk and picnic along Beaver Creek on the museum complex grounds. If these options are important to your plans, check their current availability before your visit. For geographic context, Wibaux is in eastern Montana along Interstate 94.

Fair and Other Interests

The Wibaux County Fair takes place on the fourth weekend in August; the exact dates vary from year to year. The recurring program includes a rodeo on Saturday evening sanctioned by the NRA, NWRA, and NRCA. On Sunday, a parade travels through downtown Wibaux. If you would like to plan your trip around the fair, check the dates for the relevant year before making plans.

There are other things to consider when planning your trip beyond history and events. Beaver Creek Brewery is near an interstate. Its regular lineup includes six core beer styles; individual offerings may change. Hidden Valley Outfitters specializes in hunts for mule deer, pronghorn, and white-tailed deer, and offers guided hunts. The terrain for these deer hunts ranges from dry, rolling grasslands to rugged, deeply cut canyons with scattered groups of shrubs and trees. Hunt availability is seasonal; check if you’re considering including this activity in your travel plans.

Wibaux County offers several different points of interest: the architectural history of the church and commercial district, the museum and its park, an annual fair, and other seasonal or changing offerings. Which ones you focus on depends on whether you want to include historic architecture, local keepsakes, an event, or a guided hunt in your trip.
