In Dexter, you can plan your stay around a range of interests: a nature park with a walking trail, community play and walking areas, water activities, and history and seasonal events. When choosing places to visit, it’s worth comparing their specific features: Eden Park combines native trees with a wildlife habitat, while fishing and a kayak launch are the main attractions at the two lakes.
Parks and Trails in Dexter
Eden Park is a five-acre nature park. Its three-quarter-mile walking trail winds through native trees and a wildlife habitat. The clearly stated distance makes the trail an easy-to-plan walking option. The park is open daily from sunrise to 10 p.m., so you can plan your visit within those hours.
Boon Park and West Park each offer a specific feature as well. Boon Park has accessible play equipment; West Park has a paved walking trail. If a particular feature matters to your choice, you can distinguish between play equipment and a paved trail.
The Aquatic Center adds another option: a swimming pool with a children’s play area, slides, changing and restroom facilities, and a concession stand. Plan your visit around its seasonal schedule: if you’re traveling later, check the dates for that season.
Fishing and Kayaking: Two Different Places on the Water
Community fishing is the focus at Dexter Fishing Lake. The lake includes an 11-acre natural area for community fishing and has an accessible fishing pier. Dexter City Lake offers something different: an accessible kayak launch, and only non-motorized watercraft are permitted. This restriction matters if you’re planning a boat trip; watercraft on City Lake must be non-motorized.
The water activities can therefore be distinguished by what you plan to do: community fishing at Dexter Fishing Lake, or using the kayak launch and non-motorized watercraft at Dexter City Lake. The accessible facilities mentioned are the fishing pier and kayak launch, respectively.
History and Events
The Heritage House was built in 1870 and is one of Dexter’s original homes. Another historic site is the Dexter Welcome Center & Train Depot Museum, located in a restored historic train depot. Visitors are asked to contact Dexter City Hall to arrange a time to visit the museum. Visits and community events at the Dexter Welcome Center are also available by appointment. Make arrangements in advance.
The Dexter Farmers Market offers fresh produce, local goods, and handmade items from area vendors. Food items include fresh farm-grown vegetables, homemade jam, desserts, and baked goods. For the 2026 season, the market was scheduled to run every Thursday through September at East City Park. If you’re traveling later, check current market information, as dates vary by season.
Held annually in Dexter, the Stoddard County Fair features entertainment, rides, exhibits, livestock, and food stands. It offers a different event lineup from the Farmers Market. Check the dates and program for the relevant year before visiting.
