Rugged hills, wooded shorelines, and historic mills give Ozark County and its landscapes distinct character. In the Caney Mountain Conservation Area, steep, rugged hills and unusual geology can be found across 7,899 acres. Along small streams are glades, savannas, forest openings, and old-growth forest. As you explore the area, you can choose from hiking trails, waterside experiences, and historical discoveries.

Hills, Trails, and Water Access

A 6.5-mile multi-use trail in the Caney Mountain Conservation Area is open to hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. Check the current trail-use rules before setting out. The managed areas at Bull Shoals Lake also offer opportunities for nature watching and hiking. Several access points lie along the lake and its tributaries, including public access to the managed areas. Fluctuating water levels and road conditions can affect access.

Pontiac Access is an access point to Bull Shoals Lake in Ozark County, located on Highway W. If you choose it for your plans, check road and water conditions before you leave. This keeps your directions grounded in actual access conditions, not just the name of a starting point.

Lakes and Varied Nature Experiences

Norfork Lake extends into Ozark County, Missouri. Its 22,000-acre surface area is bordered by wooded shores. Sailing, water skiing, swimming, fishing for black bass and crappie, and scuba diving are among the activities available there. Campgrounds, hiking trails, swimming beaches, and boat ramps along the shore add to the recreational offerings. This gives you different ways to spend your time at the lake: on the water, along the shore, or on a hiking trail.

For comparison, the Ava Glades Natural Area is characterized by rugged terrain, expansive views, and extensive dolomite glades. The road designated as a scenic byway, the Glade Top Trail, passes through this natural area. Another point of comparison is the 1,330-acre Long Bald Natural Area, which contains some of the best examples of glade and forest systems in the state.

River Access and Trails at the North Fork

The North Fork Recreation Area combines camping with day trips. The campground has 20 sites: two with electrical hookups and 18 without. The day-use area has river access, a water play area, and picnic sites. Individual facilities may be subject to their own operating conditions; check what is currently in effect before your visit.

From the recreation area's trailheads, you can reach the Ridge Runner Trail, a National Recreation Trail. The Blue Spring Trail connects the North Fork Recreation Area to the Devil’s Backbone Wilderness and its trail network. The two connections give you clear options for choosing a route: one trail leads to the Ridge Runner, while the other continues into the Wilderness trail network.

Mill History and Cultural Discoveries

Mills are also part of the area's history, though historical details refer to different locations. At the site of Dawt Mill, milling traditions date back at least to 1866. The historic Hodgson Water Mill was built in 1897. Spring water emerges beneath Hodgson Mill, offering swimmers and anglers a cool respite in summer. Swimming conditions and access rules can change; check before visiting.

At Dawt Mill, float trips and other river trips, as well as accommodations, are available year-round with a reservation made at least 24 hours in advance. Availability policies can change; check the details as you plan. The Ozark County Historium is housed in a renovated former general store dating from the 1920s. A genealogy library and rotating exhibits offer insights into the county's history and cultural heritage. As of August 31, 2026, a free exhibition featuring twelve quilts was also on view. Exhibitions and visiting hours can change; check the latest information before your visit. The Leopold Cabin remains a historic visitor feature in the Caney Mountain Conservation Area.
