Lee’s Summit has 1,100 scenic acres of parkland spread across 26 parks. The park system also includes 60 miles of greenways and trails. Parks and recreation are a focus of the community; Historic Downtown and seasonal events offer additional reasons to plan a trip.
Parks and Landscapes
Legacy Park is a 692-acre community park in Lee’s Summit. It includes a 22-acre lake with a fishing pier and a shoreline overlook. This offers a way to explore one park and its specific features, while the 60 miles of greenways and trails describe the scale of the city’s park system.
Nearby, south of Highway 50 near Lee’s Summit, lies the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area. It covers 3,084 acres and includes twelve lakes ranging in size from one to 42 acres. Comparing the two highlights their different scales: a community park in Lee’s Summit and a large wildlife area nearby.
Historic Downtown, Market and Art
Historic Downtown Lee’s Summit is a state- and nationally accredited Main Street community with numerous local shopping, dining and service options. Downtown is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Downtown Sculpture Walk features three-dimensional outdoor artworks selected by a jury. The annual program is dedicated to public art in Downtown.
The Downtown Lee’s Summit Farmers Market takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays from April through October. Offerings include local produce, eggs, meat, plants, honey, handmade pasta, salsa and baked goods. The mix of vendors may change seasonally; market dates are also subject to change, so it’s a good idea to check the current schedule before visiting.
The Fourth Fridays Art Walk features more than a dozen artist pop-ups, performances by local artists and live music in Downtown each year from April through August. Dates are subject to change. If you’re planning a trip centered on the market or outdoor art, the respective seasonal windows are a practical starting point for scheduling.
The Lee’s Summit History Museum is located in Historic Downtown, in the building that housed the WPA post office in 1939. Missouri Town 1855 is an open-air living history museum on 30 acres in Lee’s Summit. The two attractions offer different experiences: a museum in Historic Downtown and a separate, larger open-air museum.
Seasonal Recreation and Events
Summit Waves is a seasonal outdoor water park. Its features include a 904-foot-long action river and an 8,000-square-foot wave pool. There is also a body slide and a tube slide, a six-lane swimming pool with diving boards, and a children’s water play area. Operating details and seasonal offerings may change; check before planning a visit.
Summit Ice is an 8,000-square-foot outdoor ice rink and the only outdoor ice rink in eastern Jackson County. This facility is also seasonal, and its operating details may change. In Legacy Park, the amphitheater hosts local and national performances and events. If you’re planning your stay around one of these attractions, check the relevant dates and operating information before you travel.
