Kansas City brings together a variety of discoveries: jazz and baseball history, a historic brick house, and trails through woods and meadows. The zoo also offers unique experiences, including a safari boat ride. When planning, it’s worth first choosing the themes you want to shape your stay.

Jazz and Baseball History in the 18th & Vine Jazz District

The American Jazz Museum is located in Kansas City’s historic 18th & Vine Jazz District. The Blue Room plays a special role there: it combines the functions of an exhibit space and an active jazz club. Here, you can encounter jazz both as a museum topic and in a club that is part of the museum.

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is also located in the heart of the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District. Its exhibits present information in a variety of ways, including text panels, hundreds of photographs, artifacts, and several film exhibits. Field of Legends adds another focus. The exhibit features 13 life-size statues of the first Negro Leagues players to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The museum thus brings together exhibits and a dedicated presentation of these players. Visitors interested in exploring Kansas City’s cultural history will find two distinct topics here, both connected to the historic district.

A Distinctive House in the City’s History

The Harris-Kearney House is the oldest two-story brick house in Kansas City. It serves as a museum and as the headquarters of the Westport Historical Society. It is also recognized as a Certified Site and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The house offers a different perspective on history than the museums in the 18th & Vine Jazz District: the focus is on a specific building, distinguished by its age, construction, and historic recognition. If you’re interested in architecture and the history of individual places, this focus is distinct from the topics of jazz and baseball.

Hiking Trails, Meadows, and Zoo Experiences

The 1,805-acre Swope Park has hiking trails through wooded areas and grassy meadows. The trails therefore pass through two clearly defined types of landscape. This is a different focus from a museum visit: here, the emphasis is on walking the trails and the surrounding woods and meadows.

The 202-acre Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium connects urban and suburban families with the natural world and its diverse habitats, cultures, and animals. In the African Plains area, visitors can take a safari boat ride across the lake and see hoofed animals such as zebras and giraffes. To get around the zoo, the African Tram runs daily from the train/tram station near the main entrance to Elephant Expedition and African Market and back. Another ride within the zoo runs between Sobela Ocean Aquarium and Elephant Expedition. The boat ride, tram, and this other ride offer different ways to plan a visit to the zoo.

A Seasonal Activity in the Sculpture Park

The Art Course is an artist-designed mini golf experience in the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park. It operates seasonally, so be sure to consider the season when planning your visit. As an activity, it is distinct both from the museum exhibits and from the hiking trails in Swope Park.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

Consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay before choosing your accommodation. This lets you plan around the experiences that genuinely interest you, rather than treating the various offerings as a single itinerary.
