The Lamine River is a transitional river: it has characteristics of both a prairie or farmland river and an Ozark river. A gravelly bottom, deeper pools, and shallower, fast-flowing sections define this contrast. Cooper is therefore defined not by a single landscape type, but also by the contrast between different types of rivers.
Rivers, Conservation Areas, and Trails
The Lamine River Conservation Area is located in Cooper and Morgan counties, east of Otterville. Its rivers, streams, and ponds offer opportunities for bank fishing, wildlife viewing, wade fishing, fishing from a drifting boat, and canoeing. There are also seasonal opportunities to observe migratory birds. The options range from activities on the water to nature viewing; birdwatching depends on the season.
A different natural setting awaits you at Prairie Home Conservation Area in eastern Cooper County. The area includes fallow fields, small crop fields, grassland, and woodland. This mix of land types gives the area a distinctive character within the county’s landscape.
Katy Trail State Park offers opportunities for cyclists, walkers, horseback riders, nature lovers, and history enthusiasts. The trail appeals to a range of interests, so you don’t have to center your trip on just one activity. A section of the Katy Trail between Cooper County and St. Charles County is officially designated as part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Alongside recreation, this also offers a connection to the history of the National Historic Trail.
Theater, Museums, and Regional History
In Boonville, the history of Thespian Hall dates back to 1838. It is considered the oldest continuously used theater west of the Allegheny Mountains. The Missouri River Festival of the Arts is held at Historic Thespian Hall; an exhibition of visual art at Historic Hain House is also part of the festival. Since the festival program may change, check the details before visiting.
The River, Rails & Trails Museum in Boonville’s Depot District highlights the city’s transportation history and houses a half-scale replica of a Lewis and Clark keelboat. Admission is free, and the museum is family-friendly. The museum features both a specific exhibit and a broader theme in local history.
The Cooper County Hanging Barn and the Old Cooper County Jail also tell different stories from the past. The Hanging Barn was the site of Missouri’s last public execution in 1930. The Old Cooper County Jail was built in 1846 and operated until 1978. In Boonville, several historic markers point to landmarks from the Civil War, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the Santa Fe Trail.
The KATY Bridge in Boonville can be crossed on foot and was originally part of the MKT Railroad. Cooper County is also home to 20 hand-painted barn quilts on barns. Together with the historic markers, these examples show how railroad history and local art can be explored as distinct themes.
