A disused railroad corridor gives the Tanglefoot Trail an unusual historical dimension. The trail preserves a 43.6-mile corridor that was partially laid out starting in 1871 for Col. William C. Falkner’s Gulf and Ship Island Railroad. Today, it passes through fields, forests, meadows, and wetlands, and lies within the Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area. Landscape and the history of technology sit side by side here: different natural settings shape the route, while the former railroad bed recalls the history of a regional connection.

The access point to the Tanglefoot Trail in Pontotoc, at 139 W. Reynolds St., offers parking, restrooms, and a picnic area. Since these facilities may change, check their current status before your visit.

Historic Traces in Pontotoc

The Pontotoc Historic District encompasses 52 historic buildings in the historic center of the city of Pontotoc. The city is the county seat of Pontotoc County, Mississippi. The district extends across eleven blocks along Main Street, from Reynolds Street in the north to Seventh Street in the south. These boundaries provide a clear point of reference when locating the historic town center: Main Street forms its continuous axis, while the two cross streets mark its stated extent.

The Treaty of Pontotoc was signed at the site of the Chickasaw Council House on October 20, 1832. Chiefs and leaders met there to sign treaties or establish tribal laws and political measures. The site is at milepost 251.1 on the Natchez Trace Parkway and offers accessible areas, along with historical and interpretive information and exhibits. The treaty and political deliberations show two aspects of the site’s historical role: it was a setting for concrete agreements and collective decisions.

Lochinvar offers an architectural perspective as well. The residence is one of the most significant Greek Revival buildings in northern Mississippi. Its broad entrance façade, with a central two-story portico, makes its stylistic classification evident in the building itself. This invites you to focus on its specific design: the relationship between the broad façade and the centrally placed portico.

Landscape and Activities

The Nature Trail in Trace State Park winds through a landscape of upland pines, hardwood trees, and bottomland forest. This foregrounds different natural settings than those along the Tanglefoot Trail, whose landscape includes fields, forests, meadows, and wetlands and whose route also preserves the history of a railroad corridor. The comparison highlights two different focal points: here, the named forest types; there, the connection between landscape and transportation history.

Fishing for bass and sunfish is available at Trace State Park Lake; crappie and catfish are caught seasonally. Trace Lake offers opportunities for fishing and water sports. The park has two boat ramps that charge a fee. Fees and access rules may change, so check the current status before visiting. Howard Stafford Park also offers fishing and camping.

Local Life and Seasonal Offerings

The Pontotoc Farmers Market was established in the 19th century at the historic Court Square and is one of the oldest open-air markets in the state. It is located at 25 W. Jefferson St. and operates seasonally. If you would like to include the market in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant season.

Pontotoc is home to an Amish community associated with summer vegetables as well as handmade furniture and other items. These topics offer a different focus from the historic buildings: seasonal produce and craftsmanship add to the picture of local life. The Tanglefoot Food Truck Park is located at 139 W. Reynolds St.; which vendors are active there may vary.
