Pike can be explored through a variety of discoveries: at Percy Quin State Park, loblolly pines, stately magnolias, gentle hills and seasonal flowers shape the landscape. Boating is possible on Lake Tangipahoa. Specific plants and terrain thus sit alongside an activity on the water—two different ways to engage with nature that you can weigh when planning your trip.

Nature, Water and Golf

Quail Hollow Golf Course in McComb offers a different focus. It is a public 18-hole championship course designed by Arthur Hills. Its length is 6,754 yards from the longest tees. This figure is therefore tied to a specific teeing point. Two different activity interests sit side by side: boating on Lake Tangipahoa and golf at a named championship course.

McComb: A Historic Center

The McComb Downtown Historic District is a cohesive ensemble of commercial buildings and public and professional-use buildings, forming McComb’s historic business center. Most of the buildings are masonry commercial buildings dating predominantly from 1890 to 1940. Five Points forms the district’s visual center; the J. J. White Memorial Presbyterian Church stands at the head of Main Street. The view thus connects the building stock with a clearly identified visual focal point.

Magnolia’s Transportation and Recreation History

Magnolia’s historic resources are significant for their contribution to Mississippi’s transportation and recreation history; they include notable examples of architecture dating from 1850 to 1930. After the Civil War, Magnolia developed into a popular resort and spa town for affluent residents of New Orleans. Magnolia Depot was built in 1893 and is one of the oldest surviving railroad depots in Mississippi.

The periods in Magnolia and the McComb Downtown Historic District overlap, but highlight different aspects: the architectural examples in Magnolia date from 1850 to 1930, while most of the district’s buildings date from 1890 to 1940. This offers two different time frames for viewing the history of buildings, without combining them into a single era.

Railroads and Visit Planning

The McComb Railroad Depot Museum adds to the railroad theme with a collection of more than 1,500 railroad artifacts. On June 20, 2024, a small-scale opening was held at the temporary location at 112 Third Street; this location was to be used until repairs to the depot were completed. The museum is open Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday visits are available by appointment. Check visiting hours before your visit.

A Perspective on Civil Rights History

C. C. Bryant founded the Pike County chapter of the NAACP, which is considered one of the first in the country. This aspect complements the architecture and railroad themes with civil rights history, shifting the focus from buildings and transportation routes to a person and an organization.
