Cass County is home to 514 lakes with a combined surface area of more than 258,000 acres. This scale shapes the range of nature and recreation options: possible winter activities include ice fishing, ATV riding, cross-country skiing, hiking, and snowmobiling. Non-motorized trail systems also offer a variety of uses—they can be used for hiking, hunting, biking, and horseback riding.
Lakes, Shorelines, and Activities on the Water
Cass Lake covers nearly 16,000 acres. Its landscape includes 27 miles of wooded shoreline and sandy beaches. The Cass Lake Loop is in the Norway Beach Recreation Area on Cass Lake, where boating and fishing are available. This means the same lake offers both scenery and activities on the water, without requiring you to plan your stay around just one way of exploring.
Deep Portage Conservation Reserve offers another view of the area’s waterways. The 6,307-acre area includes glacially shaped hills, lakes, rivers, and wetlands, and is held in trust by Cass County. Deep Portage maintains nearly eleven miles of public trails for birdwatching, hiking, and cross-country skiing. Many of these trails are groomed for cross-country skiing in winter.
Star Island also brings trails and water together in its own way: six miles of trails cross the island, which is home to 199-acre Lake Windigo. Choose Trails by Length and Use
The options vary not only by activity but also by the types of trails described. In Cass County, non-motorized trail systems can be used for hiking, biking, hunting, and horseback riding. At Cut Lake, Hiram Lake, Goose Lake, and Washburn Lake, the Lake Country Nordic Ski Club maintains and grooms ski trails. Deep Portage, in turn, offers nearly eleven miles of public trails for birdwatching, hiking, and cross-country skiing; many are groomed in winter.
The Hiking Club Trail at Schoolcraft State Park is a different length: this mostly flat, mowed loop is 1.75 miles long and offers self-guided interpretation. The Heartland State Trail is a 49-mile multi-use trail between Park Rapids and Cass Lake. For activities on the Mississippi River, Schoolcraft State Park has a boat landing that provides access to the river for fishing and excursions.
