Chisago County brings its history to life in several ways: an exhibition tells its story through archival items, digital markers share historical information and photographs across its communities, and self-guided routes in Lindström lead to historic sites. There are also parks and trails offering public access to natural resources and outdoor recreation. History and time outdoors are presented as distinct highlights.
History Between the Archives and a Digital Trail
The Chisago County Historical Society’s “Unboxing Our History” exhibition presents the county’s history through artifacts and stories from the archives. The exhibition’s content may change. If you’re planning to visit specifically for this exhibit, check in advance which topics are currently on display.
The Digital Memories Trail takes a different approach: this digital history tour travels through the county’s cities, townships, and communities. Each marker offers historical information, photographs, and details about points of interest in the area. While the exhibition shares history through collection items and archival stories, the trail connects information to individual markers and locations. The two offer different ways to explore: through the archives’ stories and artifacts, or through historical information spread across various communities.
Lindström: Walking Tours and Regional Heritage
The Lindström Historical Walking Tour includes three self-guided routes to historic sites in the downtown area: the Downtown West Loop, Downtown South Loop, and Downtown North Loop. All start at the Veterans Memorial on the west end of downtown. The routes provide a clear way to connect Lindström’s history and Swedish heritage with historic places in the city center.
A distinctive landmark is the Moody Round Barn in Moody Lake Park. It is the only surviving round barn in Chisago County. While the Lindström routes take in several historic sites, here the focus is on a single building and its distinctive circular shape.
The Swedish Barn Quilt Trail offers a different focus: along the Highway 8 corridor, visitors can view quilt squares created by local artists. The trail showcases their work while also drawing attention to the region’s Swedish heritage. Art and regional history come together in a format that differs from a self-guided walk through downtown.
The Swedish Circle Tours cover eight cities in the greater Kichi-Saga area and focus on the life stories of Swedish emigrants who came to the region. They explore a regional story of migration, rather than focusing on just one building or walking route.
Nature and Seasonal Activities
Chisago County’s parks and trails offer public access to unique natural resources and opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Chisago Lakes Water Trail offers a specific look at a connected network of waterways: it spans 10 miles and 5,000 acres, with more than ten lakes connected by small channels or short portages. These connections are part of the route description and are relevant when planning. Route measurements may be updated, so check the latest information if you’re basing your plans on the figures.
In winter, the Water Trail offers a route for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and fat biking. The seasonal activities are quite different from the historical attractions: outdoor activities and a winter route are the focus here, while the exhibition, markers, and walking tours offer different ways to explore history.
